just fyi: you can discuss spoilers in the Off Topic movie thread as long as they're labeled as spoilers // [In reply to] Can't Post

it took me three showings to accept FOTR [In reply to] Can't Post

as a different story and get past the changes. But the changes weren't as extensive, and the heart of the story was intact. I didn't feel that way about DOS. Instead of a few changes, it felt like EVERYTHING was different.- including the tone. I don't even have the heart to try again.

I never cared as much about the book of The Hobbit as I did LOTR - so I think it's telling that the changes to the story were too much even for me to take. I was prepared to cut PJ more slack - but not as much as he took.

re: not liking the Hobbit so much [In reply to] Can't Post

I also am not a huge fan of the Hobbit. I can remember that, when I decided to reread LOTR before the movies came out, I thought I should start with the Hobbit and no matter how much I tried to make myself read that book, I just couldn't. So I didn't reread LOTR before seeing FOTR.

After seeing FOTR and realizing how much I had forgotten about the books, I decided to try again... and again, starting with The Hobbit.

Another fail.

Finally I just gave up and opened up FOTR and thus began a summer of transformation for me.

I have gone back and kind of reread the Hobbit since.

Therefore, I have almost no quibbles with changes from the book. It's just that, what I did love about the Hobbit - the little moments of whimsey and organic 'magic' (the thrush knocking at just the right moment... the talking ravens) - seemed stripped out of the movie.

And what was inserted was tinged with too much flash-bang action and a flirty love angle. I love romance but it needs to serve a purpose. Eowyn's attraction to Aragorn served a purpose for developing her character (even though the movie kind of bungled that to some extent). But I don't know what purpose the Kili attraction to Tauriel or the Tauriel isn't good enough for Legolas is serving.

I might have been able to take changes better than a more avid fan. But the changes had to charm and engage me and they didn't.

I love how this mirrors my relationship to LOTR [In reply to] Can't Post

"I decided to try again... and again, starting with The Hobbit.

This is just like me... if you swap The Hobbit with LOTR Smile

I'm giving the trilogy another shot (just ordered all three books...in English) Hoping against hope that it won't be, as you put it, another fail - because I do want to love LOTR the way I love The Hobbit.

haha... [In reply to] Can't Post

yes, I've marked that polar opposite with a few people. :-)

Have you made any observations on the demographics that skew to other end? Age, personality, gender, culture?

I feel that LOTR cross over all those demographics but I don't have the same bead on Hobbit fans.
