Ents? Can't Post

Hi,

I'm currently reading TTT, and I am at the part where the Huorns and Ents are attacking Orthanc.

I am also considering getting an Ent as portrayed in Jackson's film as a tattoo, however, after reading the books over, I am unsure of what Ents really looked like.

From what I recall, they were not as tree-ish as those shown in the films, correct me if I am wrong.

I'm just intrigued to know what all of you think about their actual look.

Did you think they were accurately portrayed in the movies? Or do you think they were more rustic looking?

I think this is one of those things that is open to interpretation. [In reply to] Can't Post

Alan Lee has a painting of an Ent in his illustrated LOTR, but even that shoes only the face. This might be a good project for you to create your version of an Ent, or to put as a challenge to any friends who are good artists.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauronís master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Lee [In reply to] Can't Post

Just looked at that picture by Lee, looks very similar to Jackson's Treebeard.

a less treey version of ents, quite interesting take on it! and a reminder ents are not actually walking trees!

This is a serious journey, not a hobbit walking-party.

Your Body and your interpretation [In reply to] Can't Post

Yeah I think its open to interpretation, and its your body so if you're inspired to honour Tolkien with a tattoo then go with the picture that resonates with what you got from the book. It made you want to get a tattoo so its got to be pretty good!
And heh - you want to like it!

Yes, [In reply to] Can't Post

PJ brought in Lee and John Howe as designers for LOTR and The Hobbit - although Treebeard himself was drawn by Weta staff member Daniel Falconer.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

The one I know looks like this: [In reply to] Can't Post

ent foot

But seriously, I've always imagined them looking very much like trees, but as others in this thread have noted, different people imagine them differently.

Nasmith likes his Ents... [In reply to] Can't Post

I think he's painted more than Lee or Howe. He has a slightly not-so-tree-ish image of Ents, but still closer to trees than the last one book Gandalf showed.

I particularly like The Tree Shepherds: http://tednasmith.mymiddleearth.com/2012/08/04/the-tree-shepherds/

Cheers!

I completely agree [In reply to] Can't Post

Tolkien's description of the Ents has them as basically human in shape, but with twigs for hair, root-like toes, and bark for skin. I do think Ted Nasmith comes the closest to that image of all the well-known Tolkien artists.
