Has anyone here read Z for Zachariah? Can't Post

It's being made into a movie - the film will be shot in NZ with Chris Pine, Amanda Seyfried and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

I imagine there would be a fair bit of change from book to script as there isn't all that much in the book to work from. I read this as a young teenager and it clearly made an impression as I still remember it 30 (sigh) years later.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauronís master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

It's a great book [In reply to] Can't Post

It made a big impression on me as a young teenager.
I don't know if it would work as a movie. Have they already decided to have two male leads? Surely that messes with the whole point of it?

I remember there being two main characters [In reply to] Can't Post

(the girl and then the guy who wanders into her valley), and one male character we only hear about from the wandering guy's mutterings (from his experiences out in the world before he stumbled into the valley). I assume and hope that the three actors are covering those three characters, and that we'll get to see the wandering guy's past experiences on screen (probably in flashback).

Like you, I hope they don't mess with the number of people in the valley.

Even so, am I wrong in remembering that even though the story was very affecting, the plot is quite slight?

I've read it! [In reply to] Can't Post

I read it in high school and couldn't stand it. Maybe if I read it now I'd have a different opinion, since Robert C. O'Brian also wrote Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, which I absolutely love. I'm certainly interested to see how they end up adapting Z for Zachariah.

(Long time no see, by the way!)

Mrs Frisby! [In reply to] Can't Post

That was one of my favourite books growing up. At some stage along the way I lost my copy, which is odd because I usually kept my favourite books very close. There was a time when some of my childhood things (stored in a shed on the farm) were destroyed by rats. Maybe my book was in one of those boxes, which would be weirdly ironic.

If you were interested in reading Z for Zachariah again, I have a copy you could borrow.

Nice to see, you by the way.
What do you think of DOS? I am seeing it for the first time on Boxing Day.
