Geekdom extends to taxonomists Can't Post

Check out this article: wasps named after Hobbits (and Tolkiken himself). I love it!

Hypothetical conversation:

"So do you think the wasp that just stung me is Shireplitis samwisei or S. bilboi?"

"Oh, that's gotta be S. bilboi -- S. samwisei doesn't have a Sting!"

*facepalm* there goes my brain playing tricks on me again [In reply to] Can't Post

I looked at the title of this thread like, five times and thought it said "Geekdom extends to taxidermists" Crazy I click the article and think "What? This is about bugs, not stuffed dead things." I go back and only then do I see that the word is "taxonomists".

*exasperated sigh* Wake up, brain! Don't be like my cell phone and try to auto-correct things when you're tired!

I did that too [In reply to] Can't Post

I like your analogy: our brains "auto-correct" when we're tired (or in my case, just not paying close enough attention). Can't tell you how many times I've done a double take on a headline, then usually get a good laugh once I figure out what I've done. Cool

No matter what they are named [In reply to] Can't Post

I still wouldn't be happy to be stung by one.

The opportunity to have your hypothetical conversation would make the situation marginally better, but not enough to make me want to find a Shireplitis meriadoci Tongue

..The land of long-forgotten name:
......no man may ever anchor near;
..No steering star his hope may aim,
......for nether Night its marches drear,
..And waters wide no sail may tame,
......with shores encircled dark and sheer.

..O! Haven where my heart would be!
......the waves beat upon thy bar
..For ever echo endlessly,
......when longing leads thy thought afar

Ha! I read it as 'taxidermist', too! [In reply to] Can't Post

My brain has clearly been addled by too much sugar and DoS hype. Laugh

"I had forgotten that. It is hard to be sure of anything among so many marvels. The world is all grown strange. Elf and Dwarf in company walk in our daily fields; and folk speak with the Lady of the Wood and yet live; and the Sword comes back to war that was broken in the long ages ere the fathers of our fathers rode into the Mark! How shall a man judge what to do in such times?"

"As he ever has judged. Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves and another among Men. It is a man's part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house."
