Gandalf in TABA (Spoiler) Can't Post

OK from many reviews and persons who have already seen the movies. Gandalf will be captured by Necromancer at Dol Guldur at the end.

In book Gandalf is a very important figure in BOFA because he stops Dwarf Human and Elves from fighting each others and points out what true enemy is. How can he do that when he is in cage? Does this means the siege on Dol Guldur will end at the half of the movie? then he can rush out to The Lonely Mountain.

or he just left the other coucil's members fighting Necromancer themself?

Going by this picture... [In reply to] Can't Post

i'd say Gandalf will simply race there on horseback as fast as he can. Note that he has Radagast's staff in this pic, so this is post Dol Guldur

They will ruin this moment where Gandal prevent the battle between dwarves and human-elves alliance.

Instead we will have cute scenes with Kili-Tauriel and their dwarfelf baby.

Yup! *book spoiler* [In reply to] Can't Post

I think the DG action will have to end before the battle and there will be suspense built up around whether Gandalf can show up in time to avert the disaster of a war between Dwarves and Men/Elves.

Though, we might have something like Galadriel throwing down the walls of DG or Radagast healing some of the damage to the surrounding forests after Gandalf leaves, the Necromancer and any other relevant adversaries like the Nazgul having been disposed of.

So he outraces a marching army... [In reply to] Can't Post

that came from the same place that he did and is going the same place he is.

Keeping in mind he doesn't have his magic king of the horses yet, that's quite a feat to give the army a few days head start, have to catch up to them, have to go around them far enough to not be detected, and then arrive at Erebor in time to make a quick speech and turn around to see the army on the hillside, pouring in.

Eagles, guys, I am guessing that the answer will be eagles yet again (and still without explanation or context). It's really the only logical way he could get there in time. Evil

Not that I think it will be raised. [In reply to] Can't Post

But an individual on a horse would travel much faster than an army on foot. Historical infantry didn't travel awfully quickly - well, more to the point they didn't march for all that long a duration each day, given the time taken to make and break camp for large numbers.

Though, as I say, I doubt it would be raised.

Well, in the book they are all riding wargs... [In reply to] Can't Post

but what we've seen so far suggests a large infantry portion as well. And of course in the book, the goblin army is coming from Mt. Gundabad.

Still, that picture of Gandalf to the contrary, he's not going to flank this army at great speed and in secret on an open. flat plain. And that's not the topography he has to traverse, either.

I'm just skeptical it is logistically possible for him to beat the army to Erebor based on how PJ has altered the story. Maybe it will be eagles -- but then how will the eagles arrive in the middle of the fight? Ahhhhhhhhhh -- getting the movie meddlin' equivalent of brain freeze over here.

Gosh this is getting detailed [In reply to] Can't Post

But if we choose a vaguely historical example (say Alexander's army) then they were marching at just over 10 miles per day. A rider can reasonably do 25-30 miles a day (perhaps up to 50 if he/she doesn't care about the horse).

It's a good few hundred miles from Dol Guldur to the Lonley Mountain so ... not sure there is much of an issue. If we said it was 400 miles then it might take the army 40 days to get there, and Gandalf 25 (at the more caring end!) - giving him several days in hand to avoid the army.

But I seriously doubt we will be given sufficient measurements or timescales to worry about it in this much detail!

I THINK this. About 15 minutes of Smaug and lake town, intercut with a ten minute [In reply to] Can't Post

escape by Gandalf and Radagast. Give five minutes or so of Council, 15 of Dol Guldur conflict, 15 worth of the build up to the conflict between Dwarves and Men and Elves... That still leaves you with at least an hour and a half of movie time, and possibly as much as two full hours. Plenty of time to get from A to B, especially for a Wizard, as their arrivals tend to be sudden and mysterious without running afoul of skepticim... Wizards, after all, are Wizards.

Haha! [In reply to] Can't Post

Certainly not being all that serious with this line of inquiry.

I suspect PJ is NOT going to give us the impression that Gandalf's breakneck race to Erebor will take 25 days. But then he's never been too big on travel scale continuity anyway.
