I know there was an interview with Peter Jackson where he said they tried the telepathic approach, but it didn't work. So he pretty much confirmed that his mouth will move with the words. Not sure where the interview was, but I'm sure someone on here will know.

To me they are like crocodiles, no lips at all. Nice and scary.

If none of the reviewers wrote about it, then it probably wasn't jaring, meaning that it was handled well.
(I haven't been reading reviews either)
