Only thing I'm worried about ( Tauriel . . .( Spoilers) Can't Post

Tauriel/ Kili romance . . .

Seriously , I think this is the only thing left that could really leave a sour taste. I've reconciled myself to most of the other changes but this romance is just too anti-Tolkien. I thought it was a one-sided affair but from the latest account it looks like it's going to be more than that. A dwarf and an Elf falling in love? Crazy

I have a bad feeling that the BoFA will include "dramatic" moments with Fili and Tauriel dying for each other. . .why introduce General Hospital into The Hobbit?

I'm sure PJ will go back and re-edit ROTK so as to have Kili and Tauriel's ghosts holding hands as they sail from the Gray Havens.

Not too worried [In reply to] Can't Post

I admit I was worried about the portrayal of Gandalf and Galadriel's relationship in AUJ based on the trailers. It turned out to be nothing.
I have a gut-feeling that Kili-Tauriel will turn out fine. Most of the worrisome stuff has come from speculation. Aiden Turner referred to it as flirtation the other night at the premiere and I have seen nothing that confirms Tauriel reciprocates the attention in any way. In addition, Tauriel has been growing on me despite myself. Provided the trailers and clips are anywhere near accurate presentations of her character I will be happy with her inclusion. My frantic worry over her has been soothed, so I'm choosing to be positive about this rumor. A little flirtation on the part of Kili I can handle. Just so long as it doesn't got the way of Romeo and Juliet everything will be fine. *fingers crossed*
Besides, everything else looks amazing! Have you seen all the new clips on the Home page? My friends think this one will be better than AUJ and I'm inclined to agree.

I was worried at first [In reply to] Can't Post

when rumors first broke there would be a romance, but Aidan said it would just be a bit of flirting. As long as it's not a modern type of romance/flirting, I wouldn't be worried. I'm actually excited to see Tauriel in action Smile

I've been looking forward to [In reply to] Can't Post

Tauriel since i first heard of Evangeline Lily's involvement. She's a pretty great actress, and a really nice, fun person, and she was awesome on Lost (i'm one of the few Kate fans out there). And i have no problem with PJ/FW/PB taking an unnamed captain of the guard and fleshing that out into a full-fledged female elven warrior. But all this romance stuff just seems silly. Even if it is just flirting, it seems out of place in Tolkien to me and way too goofy. And with the "hot" dwarf? Ugh. Seems all too calculated to bring in the ladies/teen-age girls. Why can't there be a cool female warrior character that is just that, and isn't defined by her relationships with the men around her. It's all a bit silly and below the source material if you ask me.

I think so [In reply to] Can't Post

I think the very subtle way in which Tolkien described how Gimli was enchanted by Galadriel, and how this was shown in the EE of FOTR, was about as far as any 'enamoured' interaction between the two species, Dwarves and Elves, should go. Anything more would seem to me to be crass and out of place in the world of Middle-Earth.

Because it involves TWO attractive people instead of just one I guess. LOL I personally can see ways in which it sort of connects to the larger themes of the story.

No, [In reply to] Can't Post

But silly flirting scenes between the "hot" dwarf and one of the only women in all of the movies does.

Like others have said, Gimli was enchanted with Galadriel's grace and beauty, against his entire cultural upbringing as a dwarf (a proper dwarf). It wasn't some goofy flirtation or crush with a very human-looking dwarf with long, flowing hair and Don Johnson stubble. It all seems very calculated and, in my opinion, quite cheezy.

And, it was written by Tolkien, and represented larger themes that were running throughout the books. Not some invented romance with no justification other than to, at best, give these characters something to do, or, at worst, designed to draw in a certain segment of the audience. Either way, i'm not buying it

The Kili/Tauriel romance isn't that bad [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm more worried about Legolas/Tauriel. At least Kili and Tauriel is different. Legolas is the obvious choice for pairings, it's really bourgeois. Tauriel and Kili can have a crush on eachother, just as long as Tauriel doesn't steal the movie.

I don't think it's out of place [In reply to] Can't Post

What I don't get is that there are some who are concerned about Tauriel/Kili, yet they don't seem to be bothered by the fact that this made-up Sue character might take the limelight from the characters The Hobbit is really supposed to be about. Crazy This isn't her movie, and the latest trailer I just saw this evening showed nothing but Tauriel and Legolas. There was no Bilbo in sight, no dwarves, and there was a fleeting glimpse of Gandalf.
I'm disappointed. And I haven't even seen the film yet. If a preview is disappointing, I can only imagine what a whole film will be. Unimpressed

The "hot" dwarf. . . [In reply to] Can't Post

Like many here, I've read The Hobbit and LoTR's umpteenth times and my image of Dwarves is not "cute" and "hot". They are creatures from the mountains, born under them, made from them. Rough, uncouth, Greedy, Hardy and short and stunted and most of them old and weathered. They weren't made like humans and elves, but Aule, "made" them.

So, a "hot" dwarf is just so silly it takes me out of the story , big time, like I can't brush it off so easily. Like when the WK breaks Gandalf's staff or Gandalf makes dumb suggestions, hopefully these scenes won't be so jarring.

sour taste indeed [In reply to] Can't Post

In a thread above someone who claims to have seen the movie wrote this about the "romance" in response to a question of whether or not it was there:

"They share one of the longest dialogue scenes in the film. It's actually a pretty scene, I wish there were similar scenes amongst the other characters. Something lacking with the film is the quieter character moments. He seems to be more interested in action.

But the romance does bloom, and during her scene of healing him (not Bard's child as some predicted), he pronounces his love for her.

This scene was tacky. For me more so because of the set-up and it's place in the story more than anything else."

PJ&co...for the first time in ME history, have REALLY screwed up in my opinion....I am quite forgiving, but really....Mad

I have been more than willing to give her the benefit of the doubt, but she is most definitely a very badly written Mary Sue now....
