Speculation: Hobbit film geopolitical theory (spoilers) Can't Post

After seeing previz footage of Azog at Dol Guldur a few ideas clicked about motivations.

This is pure speculation but here it goes: Sauron learns of Gandalf's plot (while being captured at Dol Guldur) to secure the north (Erebor/Dale & Lorien/Rivendell) from future attacks during the RotK battles by eliminating Gundabad/Msty Mtn Orcs & Smaug. In turn Sauron's offensive is to do the opposite & eliminate the Dwarf/Elven & Wizard alliance to ensure his future victory.

That is why Azog is trying to end the line of Durin & attack the elves on Sauron's behalf, as well as the Bo5a.

In the book the Bo5a is the Goblin/Orc revenge against killing the Goblin King. The movie allows for much bigger motivations.

What do you think?

I think this too... [In reply to] Can't Post

...based on Gandalf's explanation to the White Council of his reasons for helping Thorin. I also agree this is why Azog has picked this moment (he's had decades!) to start chasing Thorin around.
