"My friend, Howard Shore, faxed me this Lord of the Rings suite..." Can't Post

Awesome Hawaii Symphony concert in Honolulu this afternoon, with Sir James Galway. Fantastic performance of Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 2 in D Major. But for me, the personal highlight was this moment, with Sir James introducing an encore: "Yesterday morning, my friend Howard Shore, faxed me this Lord of the Rings suite for flute and orchestra, which he arranged for me. Last night was its first ever performance; this is the second." It was basically all the flute-centric themes, from Hobbiton and the tin whistle to some of the sustained Mordor bits, ending with "sailing West" music. I cried.

The rest of the concert ("Scheherazade") was outstanding, but this LotR moment was priceless.

I would have cried, too, Elizabeth! [In reply to] Can't Post

"Scheherazade" and LOTR. Either piece would have transported me to their fantastical lands, but both of them together...! The tin whistle of the Shire settles me down in green hills every time. "Scheherazade" whisks me away over oases and rose-covered palaces. The most memorable time I heard it was on a balmy summer night under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl. Magical!

Lucky lucky you! Thank you for sharing so we can imagine it with you.

I have walked the halls at the same time as Sir James [In reply to] Can't Post

He taught at my school for a semester (my roommate was a flute major, so I also got some cool personal anecdotes, which I have since forgotten Blush). He is by far the best flute player I have ever heard. Flutes aren't known for sounding "powerful" but somehow he manages to do that too, among his other accomplishments.

I so envy you!

A flute is really glorified whistling in a way, so [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh my... I'm so moved just hearing about it [In reply to] Can't Post

for it to be played on the tin whistle is so perfect, too. For me, it represents the Shire and Hobbits so perfectly.

Thank you... I'm delighted that you've had such a wonderful treasure of music and beauty :) *warm hug*

He started on the whistle... [In reply to] Can't Post

...and then moved to the flute. The whistle came back briefly towards the end, though. And, of course, there was orchestra, too, but it was mainly accompanying the flute/whistle lines.
