I saw the movies before I read the books so... [In reply to] Can't Post

...at this point Orlando Bloom IS Legolas. At least to me anyway. I'm currently reading through the trilogy for the first time and I actually think Legolas got the "short end of the stick" in the movies because they really cut out a lot of his dialog, especially in FOTR. While reading, there were several points where I was surprised at how talkative he was, specifically when they entered Lothlorien. The movies also failed to include, IMO, some of the best "Leggy moments" from the book like in FOTR when he killed the fell beast with one shot in the dark, or in TTT when Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli were trying to rescue Merry and Pipin from the orcs and even when Aragorn and Gimli were so tired they had no choice but to stop and rest, Legolas wanted to keep going and didn't even try to sleep when they did. Instead he chose to stay on watch all night until dawn. I though these moments would have translated very well to the screen and I'm sad they got left out. However, I still enjoy all three LOTR movies as separate works from the books.

As far as Orlando's acting, is he the best actor in the world? No, but he's also not the worst and I think he did a fair enough job portraying Legolas in LOTR even despite the odd facial expressions in the background. I don't like it when a well known series of movies replaces one actor with another, especially when it's a main character as IMO it cheapens the franchise and makes the filmmakers look a bit lazy.

I'm actually terrible at trying to think of actors who would be better in a role that someone else is already known for. I could talk all day about actors who wouldn't been right for the role of Legolas, but I think Orlando is the best Legolas we're going to get for the time being and I wouldn't want to replace him.

My favorite speech from the entire LOTR series: Sam:“It’s like in the great stories Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was after so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come and when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those are the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand, I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances at turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going because they were holding on to something.” Frodo: “What are we holding on to, Sam?” Sam: “That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it’s worth fighting for!”
