Are you me? [In reply to] Can't Post

I could have written that post. Shocked I've had a rough few weeks at work as well. My end of the week 5+ a day included grapes.
I do sense a slight irony in the celebration of the '40 hour week'. Laugh

I love Labour Weekend. It's three years this weekend since I moved into my very own little place after the earthquakes, so now I love the long weekend even more. I can't wait to get into the garden.

One day for housework, one day for schoolwork, and one day just for meeeeee! Cool

Hey, gramma! An Improper 1420, please. [In reply to] Can't Post

I once had a Ringwraith costume that I made myself, comp[letely from scratch. Well, I didn't tan the leather. ;o)

It had a "breastplate" made from a yoke of leather with binder-ring mail, epaulets with silver "biker spikes" and studs, gauntlets with biker spikes on the knuckles, a black cape, and a shield with a "moon disfigured by a death's head" (a moon and skull).

It was a kick-a** costume, too! No brag, just fact.

About 10 years ago, I was going to wear it for Halloween, but was concerned that it wouldn't fit around my waist.

It wouldn't even go over my chest.

I gave it away to a younger, thinner LotR fan.

Good day today... [In reply to] Can't Post

Almost done with my kids' costumes...my daughter is going as the Queen of the Night and my son is going as the 10th Doctor. I'm going as the 11th Doctor ;)

I also got tickets to go see the Doctor Who special in theaters next month, so definitely excited about that! Having fun now :D

The day I've been running from all my life: The Day of the Doctor."

Hey there, gramma! [In reply to] Can't Post

That robe/nightshirt sounds like fun!!

Hmm...I'd love to be one of the wizards for Halloween, but I think I'll have to be a hobbit. I've already got the shoes here, so I'm part of the way there. I'm sure I can find the necessary clothes to complete the look. Either way, I'll have some fun doing it!

*pours another cup of hot chocolate* Still busy, like I've been. I'm still hoping that things lighten up a bit come Nov. 1st, but I don't know to what extent. *crosses fingers and toes* Hopefully some R&R is less than two weeks away. Angelic

I hope that the garage work goes well this weekend, gramma! Nice that you've got some *better* weather to work with.

Have a great weekend, everyone. Smile

We have a similar three-day weekend [In reply to] Can't Post

but our Labor Day is at the end of the summer. At the beginning of summer we have another 3-day weekend, for Memorial Day, where we remember our military veterans. So your Labour weekend doesn't feel right since it's late Spring for you.

Morning tea in the rose garden. [In reply to] Can't Post

What a beautiful day! Clear and bright, with a light breeze to keep things fresh.

We had a couple of days in the Far North this week, and as well as revisiting some familiar ground we went to places we'd never been before - well and truly off the beaten track. And it was for book research, so it even counts as work. :)

We have our chocolate supplies ready for any visiting children. :)

Cheers, everyone!

There was snow on one of the mountains here, yesterday morning! [In reply to] Can't Post

That's too early for my taste, but I don't mind the colder temps so much. I did finally put on handmade wool socks, hat, and gloves today, but still wore a thin jacket. If I'd stayed out birdwatching by the water a little longer, I would've at least added another layer, though. I'm "tough, but prepared to not suffer foolishly". ;)

A mile long river of glass [In reply to] Can't Post

They melt sand, broken glass, etc. at one end, then float the resultant molten glass on a pool of molten tin, then sloooowly pull the molten glass like taffy to a uniform thickness. After pulling it a mile it's cooled down and hard enough to cut into various sizes, edged, tempered, coated, and put into those tall buildings that seem made entirely out of glass.

The process is 24/7 cause they can't shut it down without messing up the furnaces.

They have to mix in broken glass with the sand because sand alone would require much higher temperatures to melt.

Seven meals to bring them all

Happy Halloween everyone! [In reply to] Can't Post

Gramma, your Bilbo robe sounds amazing - hope you get it finished in time! And good luck with the roofing, I will be looking forward to a picture with the finished product next spring!

No costume for me this year, but I did pick up candy for trick-or-treaters. My neighborhood tends to be pretty quiet, but I always have to get chocolate *just in case* (and yes, I usually end up eating most of it afterwards Tongue)

I'll think I'll make my fall usual a hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps. That should just about kill that last of this darn cold.

Hope everyone stays healthy and warm (or for you folks in the southern hemisphere, enjoy a nice spring breeze).

Smile

Was that Sheppard AFB you inspected, Darkstone? [In reply to] Can't Post

I was there for 2 months of tech school back in 89. I probably would have liked it better if they didn't get us up at 0430 every morning.

Wow... [In reply to] Can't Post

Amazing, how people can dream up these processes!

There's a building like that at the local Native American casino, it was designed to reflect the sky and be almost "invisible". It had not occurred to me to wonder how they'd made the glass for it. Thank you for the detail!
