LotR Speculation over a decade ago Can't Post

With all the discussions whether Smaug's fall will be in DoS or TABA and other discussions of how and if scenes will be included and where in TH trilogy, I was wondering whether some veterans could tell newbies like me what the big discussions were during the lead-up to the Rings movies, especially TTT and RotK.

For example, was there debate whether Shelob would make it into TTT? Or whether the Grey Company will show up?

Thanks for sharing your memories :)

ďA dragon is no idle fancy. Whatever may be his origins, in fact or invention, the dragon in legend is a potent creation of menís imagination, richer in significance than his barrow is in gold.Ē J.R.R. Tolkien

Words of wisdom that should be remembered - both by critics, purists and anyone in between.

Would the Eagles speak?

Would Shelob talk?

How do Uruk-hai reproduce?

Arwen being at Helm's Deep was a big one. [In reply to] Can't Post

There was a report of a 'female scream' from the Helm's Deep set, which led to rabid speculation (and angst) that Arwen would be at Helm's Deep. Of course she wasn't, but it wasn't until the TT EE came out that it was revealed in the extras that not only was the original plan for her to be there, but that some footage of her had been shot. (These were the XenArwen (Xena-Arwen) discussions.)

Would Gandalf be killed at Isengard? This was prompted by a photo of a miniature of what appeared to be Gandalf (because the figure was wearing grey) impaled on a large, spikey wheel. It was on TORN only briefly before Weta asked for the photo to be removed. (However here it is in TORN's scrapbook: http://scrapbook.theonering.net/scrapbook/large/526.)

I think the most heated and long arguments came with the revelation, just a month or two out from TTT being released in theatres, that Faramir would take the Ring and the Hobbits to Gondor. Impressively, those weeks of outraged discussion went by with nary a spoiler in the subject lines.

I think a significant discussion leading to ROTK was about how that film would be able to cover everything that was left in the book, given that TTT stopped before Shelob or the Saruman confrontation at Isengard.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauronís master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

What was discussed on the boards and in the chat room are - for the most part - lost now... [In reply to] Can't Post

...but in memory.

But what was posted on the Home Page is not.

If one clicks 'back' long enough (or knows how to finesse url addresses) for home page articles, one can read those old articles.

But the earliest articles were archived on a week by week basis. I think it's fascinating to go back through those.

See this page: http://archives.theonering.net/archives/

And particularly check out the Main News and the Spy Report archives.
