"Down, down to Goblin Town" in TH! Can't Post

Hey guys. I just watched the EE scenes from Goblin Town and was surprised. First of all I liked the way that Bofur, Oin and Nori got a chance to stand out more. Obviously the EE of AUJ gives many characters their own moments. I like tha very much!!

But also because there's a variation of the "Down, down to Goblin Town" song. Best known from it's use in the animated movie. Why is it so important to make a new topic about it? Well perhaps one or two will remember my thread about this song. More than a year ago I asked if you think this song will be in the movie or not (The original topic: "Down, down to Goblin Town" In TH?). Most of you were against it because it would be too comic. Well... after seeing the movie I found the whole Goblin Towen sequence a little too comic and the song would have been perfect. But it wasn't in. But ironically it is now. At least in the EE. I won't post the link but I don't see a problem in writing down the lyrics.

---
ORIGINAL TOLKIEN
Clap! Snap! the black crack!
Grip, grap! Pinch, nab!
And down down to Goblin-town
You go, my lad!

Clash, crash! Crush, smash!
Hammer and tongs! Knocker and gongs!
Pound, pound, far underground!
Ho, ho, my lad!

Swish, smack! Whip crack!
Batter and beat! Yammer and bleat!
Work, work! Nor dare to shirk,
While Goblins quaff, and Goblins laugh,
Round and round far underground
Below, my lad!
---

ANIMATED MOVIE
Crush, smack! Whip crack!
Smash, grab! Pinch, nab!
You go, my lad!
Ho, ho! my lad!

The black crack! the back crack!
The black crack! the back crack!
Down down to Goblin-town
Down down to Goblin-town
Down down to Goblin-town
You go, my lad!
Ho, ho! my lad!

Goblins quaff, and Goblins beat
Goblins laugh, and Goblins bleat
Batter, jabber, whip, and taver hoooooo!
Below, my lad!
Ho, ho! my lad!

The black crack! the back crack!
The black crack! the back crack!
Down down to Goblin-town
Down down to Goblin-town
Down down to Goblin-town
You go, my lad!
Ho, ho! my lad!
---

AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY
I feel a song... coming on.

Clap, snap! The black crack!
Grib, grab, pinch and nab! Better and beat
Milk'em, stammer and squeak.

Pound, pound, far underground.
Down, down, down in Goblin-town
chorus: Down, down, down in Goblin-town

With a shwish and a smack,
and a whip and crack.
Everybody talks when they're on my rack

Pound, pound, far underground.
Down, down, down to Goblin-town
chorus: Down, down, down in Goblin-town

Hammer and torch,
get out your knockers and gongs!
You won't last long on the end of my prongs!

Clish, clash, crush and smash,
bang, break, shiver and shake.
You can yell it and yelp but there ain't no help

Pound, pound, far underground.
Down, down, down in Goblin-town
Yeah!

After one year it's funny to look back at questions we did ask before we know what the film will be like.

This scene [In reply to] Can't Post

in the EE has borderline ruined the movie for me. I will wait to make final judgement until I see the final EE in full but from what I saw...it was horrendous. Doesn't belong in Middle-earth at all.

It belongs in Tolkien's Middle Earth [In reply to] Can't Post

The goblins singing this song doesn't belong in Middle Earth? It's something directly from the book. Maybe you don't think it fits the tone set by Jackson's film adaptation, but you can't say it doesn't belong in Middle Earth. It comes directly from Tolkien.

I enjoyed the musical number... [In reply to] Can't Post

then again, I liked the singers in Jabba's palace (in the Special Edition even, an addition which is largely loathed among fans).

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

Haha I thought the same thing! [In reply to] Can't Post

Especially the instrumental beginning without the Goblin King singing reminded me very, very much of the ROTJ SE. You don't hear it because you want to hear good music. You hear it because it fits perfect to this crazy place. Jabbas palace is full of wierd creatures so a wierd music fits perfectly. The same here in Goblin Town. It's a strange place... why don't use strange music and even use the authors lyrics for it?

Umm... [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm not saying that the lyrics don't belong. The lyrics are fine. It's the 'rock and roll' vibe that feels like we are suddenly in a sports arena watching a rock concert that doesn't belong in Middle-earth...Tolkien or Jackson's Middle-earth.

I must agree [In reply to] Can't Post

it feels anachronical (i hope this the right word). And the goblin who hit the camera is as well : it is a scene made for the viewer to undertsand, but for the characters it cannot make sense (which explains the reaction of Balin).

It was meant to sound out of place [In reply to] Can't Post

That's why Balin calls it an abomination. Apparently rock and rock was invented by orcs.

Or maybe he's just an old fuddy-duddy.

Low res video, but the sound was interesting. Sounded very middle eastern.

The goblin king's singing was certainly painful on the ears.

I will reserve final judgement for when I see it on a real TV with real sound, instead of a low res youtube video.

I thought the sound was too modern as well, HOWEVER, it not implausibly so. [In reply to] Can't Post

All the sounds present could easily have been achieved with ancient instruments, and there have always been rhythm sections, so I will let the matter slide.

Found it! [In reply to] Can't Post

It is an alright song, bodies song will steal the EE song stage however. But the real treat of the video that's new is the extended conversation and interrogation by the Great Goblin. Very well done and very true to the book, so I'm happy.

It's kind of the way I feel about Radagast. For the most part, I like him, but he could have been toned down a bit. Pretty much sums up the Great Goblin's song for me too.

And I couldn't help but be reminded of one of my favorite movies. Tongue

I know! LOL, I feel the same way. :D [In reply to] Can't Post

When I was watching it, I just kept saying "this is so messed up". Sly But it was just so damn entertaining. What I love is that it starts off Goblin town with such a zany, completely out there tone. The theatrical cut made it feel like they were going for Moria-lite, but this really sets it apart. I was really a bit lukewarm about the Goblin material in the original version, but I have to say that I really love it now. The added material has definitely upped the fun factor of the sequence.

"All men dream; but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds awake to find that it was vanity; But the dreamers of day are dangerous men. That they may act their dreams with open eyes to make it possible."

That settles it. [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm getting the EE. I was hesitant, but with some of the scenes I've heard that are supposed to be in there, I'm getting it. I wish there was more than 13 extra minutes (Each LOTR film had more than that), it sounds too good to pass up if Down to Goblin Town is in it.
It fits, as the scene was sort of comical. Glad to hear they didn't cut it out completely.
