There's going to be a Storm Over Gondolin Can't Post

stormovergondolinartwork1 On the heels of Tolkien fan-films Born of Hope and The Hunt for Gollum comes a new effort being directed by French film-maker Dimitri Frank: Storm Over Gondolin.

Unlike those other two films, the non-profit movie Storm Over Gondolin will take viewers back to events of the Elder Days, committing to film for the first time the events of The Fall of Gondolin.

The upcoming film brings the audience into Beleriand during the height of Elven glory in the First Age. Set in the eponymous city, it was the last Elven stronghold in Middle-earth that stood against Morgoth.

The threat of the Dark Lord was growing: the Elves of Middle-earth were divided, and only Turgon, the King of Gondolin, stood in his path of ultimate victory. Amidst the intrigues and turmoil that threatened to expose the Hidden City to the forces of Morgoth, Storm Over Gondolin captures the journeys of the Man and prophesied hero Tuor and his shipwrecked Elf guide Voronwë.

Dimitri Frank says that the writing team is devoting especial care to the screenplay because of the difficulties of working with multiple canon sources.

“The screenwriters were already well-versed with the story before being involved in the production. Writing the script is like working on a puzzle; putting different parts of the story together piece by piece, creating the links, developing the characters, and we have to present it all in context to accommodate a part of the audience who might have not read The Silmarillion.”

The film is being shot in English (and subtitled in many different languages), and will be released for free on the Internet. The project is currently in pre-production with filming slated to begin in 2015.

I look forward to it! [In reply to] Can't Post

I thought "The Hunt for Gollum" was very well done.
The artist renderings for this new film look amazing and very promising.

I've always felt that the story of Gondolin would make for some dramatic visuals, especially the surprise attack during the start of the summer festival:

"At last, in the year when Earendil was seven years old, Morgoth was ready, and he loosed upon Gondolin his Balrogs, and his Orcs, and his wolves; and with them came dragons of the brood of Glaurung, and they were become now many and terrible. The host of Morgoth came over the northern hills where the height was greatest and the watch least vigilant, and it came at night upon a time of festival, when all the people of Gondolin were upon the walls to await the rising sun, and sing their songs at its uplifting; for the morrow was the great feast that they named the Gates of Summer. But the red light mounted the hills in the north and not in the east; and there was no stay in the advance of the foe until they were beneath the very walls of Gondolin, and the city was beleaguered without hope..."

Looks amazing [In reply to] Can't Post

Just the orc they created alone looks amazing for a low-budget film crew. Loved Hunt for Gollum, this should be another worthy addition to Tolkien fan films.

gondolinian balrogs have wings.

aka. fili orc-enshield
+++++++++++++++++++
the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."

this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo

i thought someone might bite at that....

yes indeed! they served as waitstaff at all the gondolinian elbucks (that's "starbucks," with a quenya prefix, btw), scrubbed out the fountain every other week, and operated the kiddie carousel on weekends. they were also an essential element of the gondolin saunas.

Who can write a fable on how the Balrog got (or lost Wink) its wings?

Great to see such independent free films exploring these [In reply to] Can't Post

portions of the legendarium that are off limits to commercial exploration. From what was shown it looks very promising. I wonder if beautifully animated versions would be the way to go ...or maybe the cost can be just has high....not sure.

Perfect! Now, what happens on the next bell? [In reply to] Can't Post

I think they start to grow back.

So, if you like, meander on over to the Tolkienia Story challenge we've been having, and write the whole tale for us!

I'll get started on the movie version. (Let's see, Jimmy Stewart as Tuor, Lionel Barrymore as the Balrog . . .)

Now that sounds like there is a story in there Meneldor! [In reply to] Can't Post

Would that be a ship's bell? And are there Pirates in it? Even better! Cool

Is there a Tolkien topic that you have wanted to look into more deeply, and write about your thoughts on it? If so, we'd like to hear from you for the next TORn Amateur Symposium- coming in November. Happy writing!
