My brother and I were debating this one. I personally say Smaug because he a dragon who can breath fire and is generally awesome.

Can you envision Fellbeast roasting on a spit? Hands down... Smaug

I usually sit down and try to think of the advantages and disadvantages of each, but for this I'm like, "How is this even a contest?" Smaug: flies, breathes fire, has razor claws, teeth, and armor (even if gold is a soft metal and very heavy, so it would not make great armor even if it doesn't tarnish ). Also, he speaks, is intelligent, and is far bigger and (presumably) older. My theory is that he is a Maia or part-Maia. Fell beast: flies, has teeth. No contest!!! Although it would be amusing to see the Witch-king and the fell beast get totally crisped by Smaug sneezing or something...
"I had forgotten that. It is hard to be sure of anything among so many marvels. The world is all grown strange. Elf and Dwarf in company walk in our daily fields; and folk speak with the Lady of the Wood and yet live; and the Sword comes back to war that was broken in the long ages ere the fathers of our fathers rode into the Mark! How shall a man judge what to do in such times?" "As he ever has judged. Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves and another among Men. It is a man's part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house."

More like Bill the Pony vs. an Oliphaunt.
