Scale & Size? Can't Post

Sotra 2 Thread ideas intertwined together...

One of Most endearing Aspects of Tolkien's writing
the SCALE of the entire World of his MiddleEarth
What its 1,000s of miles in SIZE
?
The depth of its History SCALEd in timelines of
100's or 1,000 years.
"For 3,00 years...I've.. (Elrond)
soo. you as reader are somewhat
overwelmed by that, no matter how old you were when you first read any of it.

SIZE..okay Hobbits are Half the size of people.(Halflings)
Dwarves are somewhat taller. (Still just approaching 5 foot tall)
Men are about 6 foot..
Then Elves are usually even Taller?

So to think that in these three Movies,
PJ is forced to SCALE up the SIZE
of any conflict.

AUJ was pretty small in Comparsion to FOTR
(Except for GoblinTown)

sooo. DoS will have to Scale up the Size
of distances covered, more intense conflicts, etc.
Leaving TABA's BoT5A or par with Pellenor Fields?

The time it takes to conclusion?
Will probably wear us out (In a good way)

Bomby is convinced
PJ & Howard Shore won't let us down.

(these are exciting times are they NOT!!

Bomby believes in good Dreams.

PJ's scale feels [In reply to] Can't Post

right on in LORT, but off in AUJ. I'm not sure if it is that the dwarves are too short or Bilbo is too tall or Gandalf too short, but something in scale feels off with the green screen amalgamations in AUJ.

I have to say, Bomby, your posts are never dull! [In reply to] Can't Post

Even if I have to read it several times to get the gist of it! LOL! Never mind! I think the Bot5A will make Pelennor Fields look like a skirmish!

And I agree, these are indeed exciting times! Smile

Nira, I agree about the scale. [In reply to] Can't Post

The Dwarves look too small to me in relation to Gandalf and Elrond. I thought Thorin and Dwalin were supposed to be close to five feet and they seem much smaller than that to my eye.

PS: I love Bomby's posts, even if I have to read them a couple of times to understand them.

Agree about the dwarves [In reply to] Can't Post

This may sound silly but they look like 'mini men' rather than Dwarves? I can't put my finger on it but they look slightly odd, I'll get used to it I'm sure. Tongue

I am also a big fan of Bomby's posts! Wink

me too [In reply to] Can't Post

I thought that too, since Thorin and Dwalin are supposed to be 5 foot 2" (and since I am 5 foot and a half inch, I have paid attention to the dwarf heights and also can relate their height in relation to others).

I am also good at spatial relations (ie seeing an objects size in relation to another, or seeing if something would fit in a space if I know the dimensions, etc), and to me the map reading scene makes it look like Elrond and Gandalf are about 7 feet tall, if they are supposed to be 5'2".

However, Tolkien wrote that the average height of a hobbit (or for the purposes of my example halfling) that it was about 3 foot 6, which was supposed to be HALF the height of the average elf or man of Numenor.

So, 3 foot 6 times two equals.....

7 foot.

So, if Elrond is in fact 7 foot tall (and possibly Gandalf too) then that would actually put Thorin at two feet shorter than him, which is what it looked like in that map scene Cool

I did think that Bilbo was too tall though, especially in relation to the dwarves. If Kili is supposed to be 5 foot, and Bilbo four foot two, then why when they look at the ponies does Kili only look about 5 inches taller than Bilbo????

I put it down to uneven ground- it saves brain cells some trauma Tongue

Race is meaningless. We all bleed red-no matter who or what we are. What matters is the heart. For each race has those with good hearts and those with bad hearts. You have a good heart. You do not deserve to die.

Making BOFA as big as Pellenor Fields [In reply to] Can't Post

would make Sauron seem a bit rubbish - he spends 60 years in Mordor building up a vast army in the time after the events in The Hobbit. If he can't even outdo an army of disorganised goblins from the mountains, then he's hardly the kind of foe that would cause Denethor, and even Saruman to despair of beating him.

Pellenor fields is the climactic battle of the film series, and the biggest of the era depicted. The biggest battle of all is seen briefly in the prologue to FOTR. There are lots of ways a talented director can make a battle spectacular without resorting to scaling it up beyond its original intent. Setting it on a mountain, in the snow, for instance.

"Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear."
