Made me laugh [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To
Whenever I have to trick my cat into doing something - like coaxing him to come to me so I can put him inside his traveler to take him to the vet - I have that same guilty feeling as Frodo and find myself saying, "Come, Smaegol, you must trust Master!"
!

Now I have to get a cat and name it Smaegol. Wink

My progress so far on my walk to Rivendell
I have traveled 71 miles
I have passed Buckleberry Ferry.
It is 2 miles to the next landmark.
I have 387 miles until I reach Rivendell.

Your own adventure to mirror that of the hobbits. I like it.

BTW, do you mean Philmont, New York?

No, [In reply to] Can't Post

I backpacked for 52 miles up and down mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch, in New Mexico, with forty five pounds in my pack. It remeinded me and the others of the Fellowship's journey.

Not from the movies. [In reply to] Can't Post

But lines from the books (including the Hobbit) work their way into my speech. Things like "Eggses it is!" when I'm making breakfast, or "short cuts make long delays".

Cats.... [In reply to] Can't Post

A lot of my lines are when talking to the cat. I have to admit! There's something a little Smeagol/Gollum about cats, much as I love them. My cat is particularly greedy and like Pippin thinks he should have breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner and supper- so the second breakfast lines get trotted out frequently.

Some others....
At work, when some indecipherable error message comes up on the computer "What do you suppose THAT means?"

When a journey is taking longer than expected, I sometimes find myself singing "The Road Goes ever On & On"

When the cat hasn't come home for 24 hours "Sticklebacks! Where is that cat?"

I'm sure there are more that I've said, that I can't think of at present

Occasionally [In reply to] Can't Post

Like Aunt Dora, I'm as likely to quote or paraphrase from the books as from the films.

Me, too [In reply to] Can't Post

I pull out lines from both the books and the movies so often that I couldn't begin to quote them all here. As an example, I've been known to mutter darkly, while watching certain public figures on the news, "There's naught left in him/her but lies and deceit."

The quotes go ever on and on... Tongue

You are right about the kitty metaphors [In reply to] Can't Post

While cute, they can be a bit greedy-Gollumish sometimes!

When trying to *finally* get a decision made by the menfolk of the house, I do tend to finally just put forth an option, and ask, "What say you!?"

Quotes [In reply to] Can't Post

When alone and not sure what to eat, I ask myself, "What does it wants to eat, Precious?"

If I can't find loose change in my pockets, I'll mutter, "What has it got in its pockets, Precious?"

At work, when bored, I will spring out of my cube as someone walks by, block them, and utter, "You..shall..not..pass!" Some people do it to me now. It's contagious.

has been heard quite a bit amongst family members - but I don't usually think or communicate in quotes or verse in general and LotR / AUJ etc. is no exception to that.

Hold on, little hobbit! [In reply to] Can't Post

I say this to my wee dog every time we go around the corner in the car. He likes to perch his front paws on the arm rest and slips off sometimes.
And "You young rascal!" is one I say to him often. Along with "Why does he cry?"
And "The way is shut / You shall not pass" comes out of my mouth pretty regularly, both to humans and animals. Laugh

Brilliant! [In reply to] Can't Post

Must find out first if my team have actually watched LotR, as a jo0ke aong these lines would be sooo much better if people recognized the source... :)

I work from home so I don't actually say it to anyone, just think it or mumble it under my breath, but "What new devilry is this?" is a preferred reaction I sometimes have to requests for help from colleagues and/or announcements of changes from senior management.

My kids and I do, also. Yesterday I made pot roast and boiled new potatoes for dinner, and older son humored me by asking, "What's taters, precious?" Which of course allowed me to respond, "PO-TAY-TOES, boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew..."
