My daughter introduced me to Discworld. [In reply to] Can't Post

She's the Keeper of the Pratchett in the family; she has a pretty complete collection of the books, and when I get in the mood she hands me one and says "Read this one next." She and I had the pleasure of meeting Terry Pratchett when he came to a very rare book signing in Denver.

I like some of your list [In reply to] Can't Post

Indiana Jones & Dr. Sheldon Cooper especially.

I was always a lot more into Scotty and Spock than Captain Kirk.

But a list of my favorite sci-fi/fantasy characters would include:

John Crichton & Aeryn Sun (Ben Browder & Claudia Black)

Cap'n Mal "Tightpants" Reynolds (Nathan Fillion)

Decker (Harrison Ford)

Thor & Loki (Chris Hemsworth & Tom Hiddleston)

V (Hugo Weaving)

Buckaroo Banzai (Peter Weller)

Fred Kwan (Tony Shaloub)

Favorite Non Tolkein character. [In reply to] Can't Post

Geez, no one mentionned Tyrion Lannister which both in the ASOIAF books and the Game Of Thrones series is a very interesting and funny character. I would say he is on the top of my list with Jon Snow.

There are many other which I may not recall now but Harry Potter, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Lisbeth (A girl with The Dragon Tattoo) , Patrick Jane (The Mentalist) ect ect.

Batman [In reply to] Can't Post

Batman is my favorite non-Tolkien character. Why? Because he's Batman! (Heh, little joke for the "How It Should Have Ended" fans). I love how dark and determined and obsessed he is, how he can stand toe to toe with gods without any superpowers, and how despite being a self-professed loner, he ends up with a huge surrogate family of crime fighters.

My second favorite is Morgan le Fay from the Arthurian legends. I find her very complex and fascinating. Depending on what version you read, she can be an evil sorceress, a benevolent healer, a wronged daughter seeking revenge, or a Celtic priestess. Or she can be all of the above at various times in her life.

I have plenty of other favorites (King Arthur, Arthur Dent, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Yoda, Taran from The Chronicles of Prydain, etc.). The list is far too long!

Favorite character [In reply to] Can't Post

From the ones you listed, I'd go with Han Solo. He is certainly *a* favorite character, and was a huge crush of mine when I was 11 (and "The Empire Strikes Back" was in theatres).Heart

But overall, if I had to pick one favorite character outside Tolkien, it would be Professor Severus Snape of the Harry Potter series of books.

I love the way he manages to be totally gloomy and pessimistic about everything, but it doesn't stop him; he just goes on regardless.

Why do I not own North and South. Would someone tell me?

Neither do I, but the good thing about buying hard to find items on eBay (which is where I bought my copy, twice, due to the fact that the first one I bought was the wrong region, so I had to return it. See what happens when you're too nervous and you're paying more attention to the product than the region) is that they give you the option to pay through your bank account. I just finished watching my copy of North and South myself. Now I can finally go back to the Hobbit (it's been a while since I've seen it, and I'd like to review it before my turn comes up in the Chapter of the Week on October 4th. Maybe it'll give me some ideas of what questions to ask).

Back on topic, some of my favorite non-Tolkien characters include Capt. Jack Sparrow, John Thornton (of course), Stewie Griffin and Imhotep (from the Mummy trilogy starring Brendan Fraser). I have a few more favorite PotC characters including Barbossa, Mr. Gibbs, Pintel and Ragetti (the Merry and Pippin of the PotC Universe), Davy Jones and Blackbeard. The only other movie I've seen that stars Ian McShane is Coraline (he voiced the neighbor upstairs with the talking mice. I can't recall his name at the moment).Smile

Hugh Jackman - Wolverine [In reply to] Can't Post

Wolverine is a long time favorite of mine and Jackman nailed him right out of the gate. That Hugh only improves upon playing Logan as he ages is even better.

I hope to see one more Wolverine solo movie as I loved the one from last year. Thought that was Hugh's best performance yet.
