The Tolkienia Times Headline Contest will choose a (funniest? oddest?) headline for the next edition of the Times, a month from today. The winner can also come up with a brief story to go with it when it's published, or our Managing Editor (Brethil) or one of our reporters can write the story based on the selected headline. Without further ado, enjoy The Times! TheTolkienia Times The Official Daily Newspaper of Tolkienia
________________________September 24, 2013_____________________________ Tolkienia Becomes a Nation Making both world and local headlines, fans of the literary world-maker J.R.R. Tolkien boldly followed in their favorite author's footsteps, and took the first step in creating their own bit of Middle-earth on Earth by incorporating themselves into a nation based on the blueprints of the writings of Tolkien. Appropriately named 'Tolkienia', it will incorporate aspects of... (con't p 2) The World Responds A flurry of international attention has been created. Among the first of world leaders to comment, United States President Barack Obama said this: "I applaud the move for independent expression of values, and am impressed by their courage. Also, as soon as I can I plan to visit the new nation, for a Green Summit, in something called a flet..." (con't p 6) Museum Construction Holdup: Second Call for Bids As the plans of the Tolkienia Town Square have just been released to the public, the space reserved for the Entwife Museum is not noted to have a current project plan on file. Hopes of a genuine Dwarven contractor were dashed when it was found to be merely an Internet hoax with a photoshopped ID card attached to the proposal... (con't p4) Tolkienia Politics: Rumors About Upcoming Election Quoting unnamed sources, who spoke only with guarantees of anonymity and a pint, indicated that there is really only one candidate for the office of Mayor, called 'a veritable shoo-in', naming Ethel ... (con't p 3) Classifieds: See page 12 This weeks job ads: Barista/o, Gimli's Grinds: F/T days, must make *strong* coffee. Braid Emporium, braider needed, must understand Khudzul forms. Farrier needed, apply Westfarthing Stables; must work well with talking horses. Town Poets needed, specializing in Dwarven themed verse - schedule: eh, whenever. Gardener/bodyguards and rock wrestlers needed, see Shire Jobs Limited Listings. Gifted Parody Writer needed ASAP: contact Theoden's Thespian's at the Hornburg Theater . . . . This example is of one of many of our Edible Lampposts, but this particular one is now a permanent light at the Front Gate, but many more varieties are available at our Celeborn St. location (corner of West March). This one is decked out in Autumn Treats! For seasonal and holiday use, we have a large "repository" containing many different flavors of Edible Lampposts - fresh cherry (in season), chocolate, licorice, candy cane, peanut brittle, and a cream-filled eclair one that is guaranteed to leave residents quite messy but also quite happy!

Our voters chose The Eagles as our national animal! But other popular animals you voted on should have their species memorialized too. Here's the challenge! Come up with a title/idea for the use of your favorite Tolkien animal name: mascots, school names, arena names, concert halls: anything you like! Here are the other top vote getters, (although any M.E animal is fine) and some suggestions: Fox Mearas Oliphants Suggestions could be: Local school sports teams: Unstoppable Oliphants! What to name our local T.V. news station: Fox news!!!

Ethel asked me for ship pictures for the yacht club and river. To me, these seem like fair representations of Numenorean explorers: Ethel, if none of these work for you, let me know what you'd like to see and I'll find something different. It's no bother; looking for pics of beautiful ships isn't exactly a punishment for me.

I actually tried to click around the page looking for a link to page 12...for the Classifieds to look up Theoden's Theater's contact info I'm trying to think of a headline, but every time I think of something, I feel like I'm being one of those bad journalists who try to "make" the news rather than report it. If I think of one, I post separately. Well done!

I especially love the flag. It is so pretty; I really like the blue shade used for it. Also, the monument is truly a work of art, DanielLB! *sits down and starts figuring out where to move in Tolkienia*
"I had forgotten that. It is hard to be sure of anything among so many marvels. The world is all grown strange. Elf and Dwarf in company walk in our daily fields; and folk speak with the Lady of the Wood and yet live; and the Sword comes back to war that was broken in the long ages ere the fathers of our fathers rode into the Mark! How shall a man judge what to do in such times?" "As he ever has judged. Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves and another among Men. It is a man's part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house."

A civil suit is about to appear before the authorities, concerning the controversial self-defence training, being offered to "the little folk" at the S-B dojo. Among the chief complains is a rash of umbrella related assaults, a core piece of self-defence technique, pioneered by the owners 'famoustest' ancestor, Lobelia....

I could probably ramble for a few hundred words. In writing, I'm quite garrulous actually. I suppose it makes up for my taciturn and serious minded self, once people meet me in person. I like to mock the pompous and inflated styles that many official announcements come in. They range from ludicrously childish (the kind that are put up to prevent frivolous lawsuits, such as "your hot beverage will be warm, please exercise due care and caution when removing it from the machine') to the high-flown technical language used in Public announcements, with all of their PC terminologies. I find it quite as amusing as Bilbo's 'business manner', as just as laughable. Just say 'don't drop your coffee on yourself', no need to state that coffee is hot, tube tracks are not a place yo stand, or other nonsense. If you want a full article I might be able to do one in the future.
