New game confirms that Bilbo ..... ? Can't Post

USAPOLOY have released information about a new Yahtzee game to tie in with the release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

I would've put this in the Gaming & Collecting board, but this piece of information caught my eye:

Quote
THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG™ Collector’s Edition of YAHZTEE® includes a replica of the goblet BILBO BAGGINS™ successfully burgled from SMAUG™ the Dragon that serves as the dice shaker.

Which seemingly confirms that Bilbo will still the cup (before the Arkenstone?) in the film.

In the book:

Quote
He gazed for what seemed an age, before drawn almost against his will, he stole from the shadow of the doorway, across the floor to the nearest edge of the mounds of treasure. Above him the sleeping dragon lay, a dire menace even in his sleep. He grasped a great two-handled cup, as heavy as he could carry, and cast one fearful eye upwards. Smaug stirred a wing, opened a claw, the rumble of his snoring changed its note.

Though the game cup doesn't match the book description, what do people think? It's nice to have small details from the book in the films. This might also confirm that Bilbo visits Smaug twice in the Chamber - once to steal the cup, and the second to play riddles?

Good news, if true [In reply to] Can't Post

Of course, it is possible that the game takes this from the book and not from the movie, but that seems unlikely. Thanks for the heads up!

I hope it's right... [In reply to] Can't Post

.. and in the film. It would have changed the story so much to bring the Arkenstone forward as people were suggesting.

This looks promising.

Looks like there could be 7 gems around the outside [In reply to] Can't Post

possibly representative of the 7 rings. But that's jumping to a lot of premature conclusions.

Looking at it closer [In reply to] Can't Post

I see that the dice have pictures of sting, the key, the Ring, a spider, and ... Smaug?

Six. [In reply to] Can't Post

The goblet's base is a hexagon and each gem corresponds to the hexagon's sides.

Nice idea though.

But I don't think it's been a problem in the past. All direct merchandise with "The Hobbit" or "The Lord of the Rings" movie titles have always seemed to be film cannon, and not book cannon. A couple of people were all concerned a couple of days ago that the Arkenstone had replaced the cup, so I hope this is true. Wink

And a long shot - can anyone make the runes out down the cup?

True, and the key is from the film [In reply to] Can't Post

But Smaug (presumably) is not an accurate rendition of the film version.

I have no doubt... [In reply to] Can't Post

Bilbo's actions alone inside the Lonely Mountain, including the theft of the goblet and his conversation with The Dragon, rank with "Riddles in the Dark" as being iconic scenes in the tale. I am certain that Mr. Jackson recognises this and will handle these passages with great care.

Check out the score pad... [In reply to] Can't Post

The score pad appears to begin with "Ring" #1 and end with "Smaug" #6, and #2 is one word about twice as long as most of the others, so I think I may be right. That new HDMI cable I bought has its uses! Wink

It is much too blurry for me to be sure, but it definitely looks like it. Enough so that I am 99% convinced.

A Yahtzee game? [In reply to] Can't Post

Crazy I don't understand some of this merchandising. However, if it is any indication that these scenes will closely follow the book, huzzah!

"I had forgotten that. It is hard to be sure of anything among so many marvels. The world is all grown strange. Elf and Dwarf in company walk in our daily fields; and folk speak with the Lady of the Wood and yet live; and the Sword comes back to war that was broken in the long ages ere the fathers of our fathers rode into the Mark! How shall a man judge what to do in such times?"

"As he ever has judged. Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves and another among Men. It is a man's part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house."

Is there a Tolkien topic that you have wanted to look into more deeply, and write about your thoughts on it? If so, we'd like to hear from you for the next TORn Amateur Symposium- coming in November. Happy writing!

ha! wonderful news! :D :) [In reply to] Can't Post

wonder how they'll get the timing for all these scenes with Smaug correct..... and to fit everything in this film (and maintaining its awesomeness), it seems impossible!!!
Can't wait to see what they come up with Cool
