Unfinished Tales discussion sign-up Can't Post

Hey all reading room readers. I HAVE MADE THE SCHEDULE. Wink

For those who have not kept up with our previous discussions (and poll) about what to read together next, we have decided to move on to Unfinished Tales after Brethil's discussion of Letter #131. That is meant to go for four weeks, so we'll kick off the Unfinished Tales discussion during the week of Sunday, October 13.

The decision was made to skip the "Narn i Chin Hurin" portion of UT during this read-through and to discuss The Children of Hurin after finishing UT. This will allow us to take our time on that book without completely interrupting our UT discussion. So for the time being, we will just focus on the tale "Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin". Because I took it upon myself to get a schedule put together, I decided that I would break this section down into five smaller discussions. There is certainly enough material to discuss in each, so unless anyone has any reason why these five sections don't work, this is what we'll go with.

Here are the sections I have chosen. I have named them for ease of reference.

October 13: The Wanderings of Tuor This section obviously begins at the beginning and goes through Tuor's early life, meeting with Gelmir & Arminas, and his stay at Cirith Ninniach. It ends with the phrase, "But he knew not that the wind came fresh from the Great Sea."
October 20: The Visitation at Vinyamar This section encompasses Tuor's time at Nevrast and his conversation with Ulmo. It ends with the phrase, "And Ulmo was gone, and the sea was in tumult, as the wild waves of Ossë rode against the walls of Nevrast."
October 27: Voronwë Aranwion This section encompasses Tuor's meeting with Voronwe and Voronwe's story. It ends after Voronwe finishes his account with the phrase, "Then Voronwë fell silent; for night had come, and the stars shone white and cold."
November 3: The Journey of Tuor and Voronwe This section contains, obviously, the journey of Tuor to Gondolin. It ends with the phrase, "But Tuor said: ‘Forebode no more. Death in the wild is certain; and death at the Gate is yet in doubt to me, for all your words. Lead me still on!’"
November 10: The Gates of Gondolin This is the last section and goes through the end of the unfinished tale Wink

So now I need discussion leaders! Anyone is welcome to do so. If you've never lead before, now's your chance! All that's needed is to reply to this post. Thanks to all involved, and to all volunteers! I'm looking forward to the discussions. Smile

Is there a Tolkien topic that you have wanted to look into more deeply, and write about your thoughts on it? If so, we'd like to hear from you for the next TORn Amateur Symposium- coming in November. Happy writing!

Just so that you are aware.... [In reply to] Can't Post

The week of November 10 is when the TAS is on also- probably for 2 weeks. Are you ok with this Ardamire? I'm not sure what you discussed with CG and Brethil.
Thank you for organising the schedule- I would like to lead a discussion this time, but can't commit just at the moment since I'm about to go into hospital for an operationFrownPirate

PS Love Brethil's picture of you- but makes you look somewhat like a Vulcan!WinkEvil

wouldn't it make more sense [In reply to] Can't Post

to either have the next tas before ut or have the tas after?

it would be pretty disruptive (since there are only five chapter discussions for ut) to break up ut with the tas.

just one opinion.

cheers --

aka. fili orc-enshield

the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."

this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo

Some overlap will be fine [In reply to] Can't Post

We have looked at the scheduling many times; the TAS is rather firmly scheduled at this point, due to various RL and TORn events coinciding. But having touched base, if the UT chapter is within the same week, it should be fine.

Lots of fun in the RR! The more the merrier!

Smile

Looking forward to the next stages in discussion very much.

Time span? [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for doing the schedule, Arda, especially after all the grief (but good-natured grief) we gave you over it.

I'm not sure of the time span you have in mind. Are you thinking of 5 weeks for all the Tuor chapter, with one post per week, or doing the chapter in 1 week, with 5 posts that week?

Considering that for chapters in the Sil discussion, we did 1 per week, with the exception of Beren/Lu and Turin, which we did in 2 , are you thinking we'd spend multiple weeks on each UT chapter? That makes me wonder how long it would take to cover the book as a whole and plunge into others, in addition to preparing for our mighty trek through LOTR.

I'm up for a section or two, in any event.

I can take some more sections and compact if we need to - didn't think about the overall duration and how it would translate.

As you may have noticed [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been incredibly busy and without Internet, so my time on TORn has been severely limited - basically just what I can do on my phone. And it's not likely to change very soon. So anyway, y'all can do whatever you'd like. I had spread it out simply so that we could cover as much as possible without feeling rushed. I thought this section and "The Mariner's Wife" would be the two lengthiest sections, and the other things would go rather quickly. But again, it's up to you all as I won't be able to join in much.

We *have* missed seeing you around [In reply to] Can't Post

Wish you had more access and it was easier to post - its hard by phone. Hope to see you in the discussion (once we get going) when you can post.

True about the largest sections - will have to look overall but some chapters in more detail and some in less may be a good idea. Thank you for doing the breakdown in that chapter. Angelic

We still have to get some sign ups going. If anything I can start out the first few sections, and I know CG had said he might do some too.

Mikah raises hand... [In reply to] Can't Post

I would be happy to take a section. I am new here, however I did read the Silmarillion with you guys, although I was very sneaky about it. Kinda lurking a bit! So, if you need someone, I am readily available. Any section with the exception of the first week, that is the week I have mid-terms. If you need volunteers, just let me know and tell me which section you would like me to cover. If you are good to go, I still plan on joining the discussion!

And nice to see you here in the RR! Glad you have delurked to join in!

Watch this space - we may use Ardamire's schedule for the involved first chapter, and then go to a chapter a week.

Thrilled to have you take a week! Will let you know when we finalize things...look here or I will PM you with details.

Great section - it will be reserved for you [In reply to] Can't Post

That will come a bit down the road - this first sign-up is for the large section on the wandering of Tuor.

We may do smaller chapters one a week, but this large piece and The Mariner's Wife may be divided as they are so much to discuss.

I shall work on a larger schedule once we get underway. But if that section interests you (and it is quite complex) would be thrilled to see you cover it.
