there are so many fantastic musical cues. Some of my favourites are right as Frodo runs of and Bilbo says "He doesn't approve of being late" as we pan over the shire.
Also when Gandalf says "All good stories deserve embellishment." Love the music there.

"If ever you should need my help, I will come". After the Hobbit Theme during Gandalf's soliloquy, and then "Do not be afraid, Mithrandir", there is the soft but powerful building of the strings as Galadriel speaks this line in Elvish, then it fades to nothing and she is gone.
Don't mess with my favorite female elf.

My top five is:
1. When the dwarfs of Erebor charge towards the gate where Smaug is tearing it down, that piece of intense and powerful music is awesome!
2. In Bag end, when we hear Bilbos Theme when Gandalf says: "All good stories deserve embellishment"
3. In the first Warg chase, the part right after they kill the orc, when those awesome drums begins. Also the part where Kili screams "There is more coming!!"
4. Bilbos speech for the dwarfs, teardropping imo :)
5. Of course the Eagles scene, so beautiful...

Dont get it why there is complaining about the lion from MGM and the "roaar"....this beautiful piece of intro music is on the Soundtrack as well, without any "roaaring". Its a trademark for MGM and nothing which would bother me .

A few that stand out are the eagles, any time the dwarf theme comes on (particularly when they all rush to attack the trolls), and the hobbity music that plays when Bilbo feeds Myrtle an apple. It was such a sweet moment.
I also love the elven theme that plays when the elves ride up to attack the orcs. It's grand, heroic and in a way somewhat comforting, signalling aid has come in a moment of peril (although in this case, unintentional).

Movie and not CD:
"The Eagle Rescue/ The Flight To The Carrock". This track is undoubtedly the most beautiful music I've heard for a long time in cinemas. Unfortunately it's not on the soundtrack CDs.
Movie and on CD:
I really liked the "Over Hill" sequence. It gave me this typical LOTR feeling when I first heard it. Also I really like the Gandalf The Grey Theme. It appears when he appears twice at Bag End, when he talks about Radagast and also when he saves the day in Goblin Town... Sorry I have to go on and on... I love the whole score so much and can't wait to hear the one for DOS.

2) The flight of the Eagles - as good as anything Shore has written for Middle-earth
Sadly, for me, much of the rest of the soundtrack (as Jackson has himself admitted) was a little too "cut n paste" from the original trilogy. Here's hoping DoS (as it has new locations and new characters) will have its fair share of new, iconic themes

Trying not pick too many LOTR cues.
I kinda cheated and picked 10 that come to mind, but #1 is easily my favorite stretch of score in the film.
#1. *FAVORITE* From Bilbo's standoff with Azog through to the Dwarves last stand and Eagle rescue and flight. Brilliant! My heart skipped a beat.
2. The Hint of Bilbo's theme in Bag End when Gandalf is talking to Bilbo after the Bullroarer Took story "Well are good stories deserve embellishment; you'll have a tale or two of your own to tell when you get back."
3. The Opening Logos
4. Over Hill; great cues in Gandalf and Galadriel's conversation amidst the company leaving. As well as the Fellowship parallel with the Misty Mountains theme during the journey montage. Perfect.
5. The Misty Mountains Fanfare as heard in Goblintown when Gandalf strikes the Boulder with his staff
6. Gandalf's full theme followed by the Misty Mountains theme when he makes his big appearance rescuing the Dwarves in Goblintown. "TAKE UP ARMS! FIGHT. FIGHT!!"
7. Bilbo's speech to the Dwarves.
8. "Out of the frying pan" "and into the fire!....Run...RUN!!!"
9. The Pity of Bilbo
10. Thorin's standoff in the gates of Erebor as Smaug approaches

Well, if I had to pick just one musical 'moment', I would pick the instance where the music swells as Bilbo glances down at the contract and then back out the window. I really, really love that track - even though it was soooo hard to play on the piano, as fast as it is, and with the left hand jumping up and down an octave every measure. It just conveys so much breathless excitement - it has the voice of a kid screaming, "I'm going on an adventure!" I just love it.
However, if I am allowed to pick other favorites, they would include: (1) any time the Misty Mountains theme kicks in (2) Smaug's theme, heard in the prologue and then at the end of 'A Good Omen' on the soundtrack - it's not in the movie (3) the Eagles' Song (4) 'Warg-Scouts' was another incredibly hard song to play, and I don't care much for it in general, but at the very end, as the Dwarves find themselves cornered, what I've taken to calling the 'Erebor' theme (not the same one as in the 'Erebor' track; this one goes something like C-E, C-F, C-G... argh, I can't remember how it goes; I don't have my music book handy) kicks in. I love that theme, too. Then we get the snippet of the Lothlorien Elves' music, as misplaced as it may or may not be, and that is also grand and beautiful. (5) The chorus when Galadriel turns around to face Gandalf was quite nice, as well.
I just love this music so much, okay???

Misty Moutains theme as the journey away from Rivendell, the music in AUJ was phenomenal and I remember that bit in particular impressing me the first time I saw it in the theater, which made me use up Christmas iTunes vouchers to buy the soundtrack.
