Letter #131 Discussion, starting Tuesday, September 24th Can't Post

Greetings, dear RR Fellowship!

Just a heads up that we will be discussing that most revealing letter of JRRT's beginning Tuesday the 24th - I am switching out the start day to Tuesday as my work week keeps me from posting on Sundays and Mondays, and I do hate to post and run! I will most likely continue that pattern for the four week stretch of the discussion.

We will take four weeks to cover the Letter - as CG points out its more like a treatise on the legendarium. I plan on discussing each Age weekly, plus general philosophy in one week as well.

So anyone who would like to join in (and we would love to see you!) - this gives you some time to get a hold of this wonderful piece of Tolkien's writing.

"The Letters of JRR Tolkien", edited by Carpenter, is available as a volume, and Amazon has a very competitive price for the book.

Cool I am looking forward to discussing it with you all!

Is there a Tolkien topic that you have wanted to look into more deeply, and write about your thoughts on it? If so, we'd like to hear from you for the next TORn Amateur Symposium- coming in November. Happy writing!

For those without a copy of "Letters": Some editions of the Silmarillion have this letter with the forewords [In reply to] Can't Post

For example. In my eBook of the second edition, it appears in the preliminary pages, headed "from a letter by JRR Tolkien to Milton Waldman, 1951".

So you may have this text already, even if you don't have a copy of "Letters".

That said, Letters is an interesting read, for much more than letter number 131, and well worth buying (or borrowing from a public library, if funds are tight).

Googling will find copies of the letter on the Internet, but it's usually not clear whether those copies are licensed from the copyright holder…

I expect this discussion to be really interesting: well worth a bit of effort to get hold of the text.

Disclaimers: The words of noWizardme may stand on their heads! I'm often wrong about things, and its fun to be taught more....

"nowimė I am in the West, Furincurunir to the Dwarves (or at least, to their best friend) and by other names in other lands. Mostly they just say 'Oh no it's him - look busy!' "
Or "Hold off! unhand me, grey-beard loon!"

Thank you for the info! [In reply to] Can't Post

Smile I had forgotten about some Sil copies having #131 (my copy doesn't have it, so I think I only know that because you've posted about it before). Thanks for the heads up!

Also, consider your local library! [In reply to] Can't Post

Libraries are wonderful, and we tend to forget they're there. Nowadays many libraries also loan Kindle and iPad versions for a limited number of days.

Looking forward to this... [In reply to] Can't Post

and, interestingly, Letter 131 is just where I have reached today in reading LettersSmile As NoWiz says- it is in some copies of the Sil- in the UK the Harper Collins version has it (the one with the picture of Tanequitil on the front) Thanks for leading Brethil
