DoS Plot Summary Attempt Can't Post

Just an attempt to put together the plot of the film from what we know so far - did this a couple times with AUJ, so thought I'd give it another go. Feel free to add anything that's missing so we can assemble as inclusive an attempt as possible. (Note - some speculation and supposition):

Prologue - We know that PJ has said the film opens somewhere "familiar but unexpected". We also know that a scene was apparently shot at the Inn of the Prancing Pony during the past summer's reshoots (perhaps a flashback with Gandalf and Thorin planning the Quest for Erebor), and that there will be more material concerning Thrain, who will be played in an expanded role by Sir Antony Sher and who will be present in a revisitation of the Battle of Moria; both seem like potential prologue material - or, they may be present somewhere else in the film.

Act 1

Most likely will open with Thorin & Co. heading for Beorn's house, probably with Azog (or the threat of Azog) still hot on their heels. Perhaps we might have an exchange between Bilbo and Gandy here, as reported from Cinema-Con 2012:

Gandalf: You're not the same Hobbit who set out from the Shire...what did you find down there, in the Goblin tunnels?
Bilbo (pausing, fingering the Ring): My courage.
Gandalf: Good...you're going to need it.

Thorin & Co. arrive at Beorn's house, apparently enraging Beorn who attacks the Company as they try to keep him out of his house. Mikeal Persbrandt has mentioned being strapped to the ceiling for a "difficult torture scene"; his Bridge Direct action figure mentions that he is "the last of his kind"; and the (possible) bear paws used a Bolg's shoulder pauldrons have led to speculation that there may be a subplot where Bolg or the Necromancer's minions have a personal animosity with Beorn (perhaps we might have a flashback, or Beorn will be introduced to the audience prior to the Company ALA the Rohirrim in TTT). There will also apparently be a scene where Beorn questions/slays at least one Orc himself.

Thorin & Co. will enter Mirkwood, while Gandy will leave them to investigate the growing shadow of the Necromancer; he seems to be departing with some urgency in the bit of this scene from one of the vlogs:

Gandy: Give me a horse!
Ori: Why, where are you going?!
Gandalf: In search of answers!

Perhaps information given to Gandy by Beorn will spark his side-quest, but for whatever reason, he evidently will leave the Company in a flurry here. Bilbo and the Dwarves enter Mirkwood where many of the events from the novel are (or at one point were) included, such as: Bombur falling into the enchanted stream and being carried by the other dwarves; Thorin's stag; and Bilbo's tree/the butterflies (some of this may end up in the EE, or IMO, it's likely to play-out as a rather brief montage). Somewhere along here, Ori may find a pouch witch will elicit an alarmed (or excited?) response from Dori.

Meanwhile, Gandy investigates the King's Tomb (crypts of the Nazgul) along with Radagast, only to find that they are empty. There was mention of Gandalf and Elrond scouting out Dol Guldur, but this seems to have been replaced with Raddy as Gandy's sidekick.

Bilbo and the Dwarves will encounter the spiders; the dwarves will be "webbed" by the spiders, but will apparently be given chase by the beasts before they're captured - Bilbo evidently escapes and has a confrontation with the spiders here, where Sting will most likely be named. The Wood-elves including Legolas and Tauriel are involved in fighting off the spiders in the film. The dwarves are captured, and Thorin will have a rather tense encounter with Thranduil (Thrandy: It has been a long time since Thorin Oakenshield ventured north...for what purpose?) after which the Dwarves are imprisoned.

A subplot will involve Tauriel, a young Silvan elf who is a Captain of the Elvenking's guard and who feels strongly about intervention in the "rise of evil" (potentially a response to the growing power of the Necromancer) while Legolas, apparently taking a cue from his father, is initially isolationist. There is rumored to be a romantic subplot involving Tauriel as well; supposedly Kili will become attracted to her (though for all we know, this is one-sided and a Gimli/Galadriel type-thing); there are pursistant rumors of a Legolas/Tauriel romance; and (IMO most intriguingly) rumors that Tauriel will have an unrequited thing for Thranduil.

Craig Hall has been cast as Galion, the King's butler, while Eli Kent is playing an Elf named "Lethuin". (?!?) Robin Kerr also plays an Elf named "Elros" (probably of Rivendell), but obviously we don't know how he fits into the film.

At one or more point(s), the Elves will battle ranks or Orcs - either on the parapets of the Woodland Realm, on Dol Guldur, somewhere along the River Running, or some combination of these options. At least one Orc will be captured and interrogated by the Elves.

Legolas: There was more the Orc could have told us.
Thranduil: There was NOT more he could have told me!

Azog and his hunters will continue to track Thorin's Company into DoS; presumbably, Fimbul - who was originally intended to be Azog's lieutenant, and who appears on the DoS Annual - probably plays a larger role reminiscent of Yazneg in the first film. Ben Mitchell also plays "Narzug" who it doesn't seem was in AUJ. Conan Stevens as Bolg will also have a part to play amongst the Orcs, probably not only in relation to Azog but in the Necromancer story as well.

Act 2

At some point the Dwarves escape from the Elves' dungeon (a LEGO playset implies that at least part of this sequence will stay somewhat true to the novel); Tauriel will at some point declare "the cells are empty" in Elvish as the dwarves are found to have escaped their containment. Bilbo and the dwarves are quite noticeable as opposed to the book as they take off in barrels. During their escape, Thorin's Company gets caught in a three-way battle with both Legolas/Tauriel/the wood-elves and Azog/the hunter orcs in what seems will be a fairly large setpiece.

Somewhere in here Gandy's investigation will lead him into Dol Guldur, into which he descends despite knowing it's "a trap". Here he'll confront an either crazed or undead Thrain (and later seems to be following Thrain through the Labyrinth of Dol Guldur); a Gandy/Bolg toy set, with Bolg's Bridge Direct action figure describing him as the Necromancer's interrogator, imply that Gandy will meet Bolg in the Necro's dominion at some point as well. Supposedly Gandalf will be rescued at some point by Radagast - IMO, he could get in over his head here and Raddy could use his abilities to help him escape. Around here Gandy will also conclude or uncover the identity of the Necromancer as well, to Raddy's alarm. The Nazgul or other monsters could take part in this part of the film as well during Gandy's investigation into Dol Guldur; other than Radagast, Beorn, Legolas & Tauriel might come into play IMO.

Thorin's Company evidently are picked up by Bard the Bowman on the banks of the River and taken into Laketown; it seems that Orcs follow them into Esgaroth (pursued by Legolas/Tauriel) and injure a girl (possibly named "Tilda") who Tauriel will later heal. The Master (seemingly) welcomes the Company into Laketown, thought it's not known how his "conniving civil servant" Alfrid will feature. Here Bilbo and the Dwarves will be clad in new raiment after being stripped in the dungeons of the wood-elves (gulp)!

Bard certainly seems to have reservations about this quest, and will have a relationship with his young son Bain. Bard will be a bit of a "scoundrel" and we won't initially know if he's a hero or not - at one point he'll be chased by Braga, the captain of the Lake-guard played by Mark Mitchenson, who it seems may basically be the "Gamling" of TH. Apparently Bard will not be a Guardsman of Lake-town, at least not initially, but will be more of a "Robin Hood" figure who helps the people of Esgaroth in the face of the Master's neglect, and is at odds with Braga who is head of the Guard.

Laketown is supposed to be a "big moment" for Fili and Kili, as presumably they'll be revealed to be Thorin's heirs here; he may also plan to leave them behind before heading off to the Lonely Mountain; Kili also seems to have been inflected by an "orc wound" as his way into Esgaroth. The changing of seasons from Fall into Winter seems to imply the Company spends a long stretch of time in Laketown.

Act 3

Thorin's Company will eventually set off for the Lonely Mountain, passing the ruins of Dale and climbing the Dwarf statues at Erebor's entrance. Eventually they'll probably use the key and hidden door, allowing Bilbo to gain entrance. Bilbo will have a face-to-fang encounter with Smaug - thought it's unknown how similar it will be to the book (Bilbo will try to evade the dragon at one point, and move through the treasure chamber at great speed at some point as well).

Somewhere toward the end of the film Gandy, Radagast and probably Galadriel (and potentially other characters as well) will attack Dol Guldur in an attempt to drive out the Necromancer. At some point, a "Gandy doll" was used during shooting, meaning that Gandalf might be incapacitated by some way and have to carried out by Galadriel (not sure where this info comes from?). IMO, Gandy and possibly Raddy will try to take on the Necro alone, but will be saved by the arrival of the White Council and its allies (Silvester McCoy has said there's a scene in Film 2 where the wizards are fighting "some other evil" in Dol Guldur, though Saruman is already supposedly "up to no good" according to Philipa Boyens, and it seems Christopher Lee didn't take part in filming for Dol Guldur). Again, the Nazgul, Orcs or other monsters could play a part as the minions of Sauron. In vlog 1, PJ also briefly shows off what appears to be the Necromaner's inner chamber stating that "he" - presumably Sauron - could "go out fighting" and "impaling people"; this implies that there will be some soldiers at Dol Guldur, possibly some wood-elves (which would fit scenes of Leggy and Tauriel fighting orcs in an old stone location in the vlogs).

Probably playing out concurrently with the Battle of Dol Guldur will be a confrontation between Smaug and Thorin's company on the slopes (and walls?) of Erebor, where the dwarves fight against the dragon using all manner of dwarvish "artillery"/explosives. This is described as being the "biggest" scene of PJ's career (seems like a slight understatement).

As of now, it seems likely that DoS will end with a stalemate with Bilbo and the Dwarves trapped in the Lonely Mountain as Smaug takes off for Laketown; and Gandy/the White Council driving the Necromancer out of Dol Guldur (but not defeating him, thought we don't yet know - despite rumor and speculation - whether the Necromancer will play a part in TABA).

So, there it is...will post an updated version after the next trailer and/or more solid info comes out as we get closer to the film's release in cinemas.

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!
