*Is doing a happy dance!* Can't Post

We just heard from my sons Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist and he's finally going to get his stinking tonsils out on October 25th! We're just so relieved, we'd been told it could be anything up to 18 months before he got in. So happy his GP sent another letter after his fourth bout of tonsillitis since we'd seen the specialist (end of June) asking if he could be moved up the wait list. He's home again today, after being sent home by the school yesterday, with tonsillitis. It's been getting him down because he's missed so much school, when I told him he just couldn't stop smiling.

Sorry about the Mumsy post, but it's been worrying us for some time now. His Dad nearly died from tonsillitis when his throat became so swollen it closed up. He was lucky a friend called over and got him to hospital. That was before we had mobile phones, so he couldn't have messaged anyone for help.

Boy, I'm just so massively relieved!! Keep your fingers crossed for us that it doesn't get cancelled!

Heart

Glad for you, Kel!! I had no idea tonsillitis could be so severe! I've no experience with that -- or wretched ear aches that are so common in kids -- but I've certainly had plenty of other occasions to suffer over my child's suffering, so I sympathize as any mother could. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and your boy! Smile

A tonsillectomy! [In reply to] Can't Post

Tonsillitis is a pain to have, I'm surprised they didn't schedule him for the removal the first time he had it, especially considering family history. Good that he'll go in and have it done in a couple of months! Smile

I remember that those were very common back when I was a kid - but they were probably doing far more of them than were actually necessary. I had tonsils and adenoids removed - the latter were blocking my nasal passages. All I really remember is being told I could have ice cream afterwards, but afterwards my throat hurt too much to enjoy it!

oh yeah, the ice cream ploy [In reply to] Can't Post

did you ever hear Bill Cosby's comedy bit about that?

I had one when I was 15 after one tonsil swelled so much it nearly closed off my throat. I was in the hospital 3 days.

MUCH better to get it done when you're younger! Best wishes for a speedy recovery to your young'un, Kel! And yes, promise them ice cream!

And the fact that a couple of neighbor girls loaned me their viewmaster and some slides, since it was before we had TV. That was nice of them.

I hope his throat stays nice and calm until then, and that he can keep up in school. My daughter had migraines interfere not only with school, but with every major test (SAT, ACT). She finally got good meds, but it was a battle.

Keep us posted! We'll want to cheer him on, and cheer him up after!Smile

They prefer not to remove them [In reply to] Can't Post

but he's been having trouble with them for several years now. It actually took two years for the GP to finally agree to refer him to a ENT specialist. So for him to be scheduled so relatively soon for them to be removed is a huge weight off our minds. He's just been so sick this last year.

I don't think they do the ice cream treatment anymore either, but I guess I'll find out soon enough Smile

Cheers Grey Elf :-) [In reply to] Can't Post

Yeah, I never knew tonsillitis could be so bad, until I met Mr Kel and he told me about his experiences.

It always seems to hurt us even more than it hurts them, doesn't it? I was really worried he'd be upset about going into hospital, it'll be the first op he's ever had, but he's really taking it in his stride. I think he was more worried that it would interfere with his birthday in two weeks and was relieved to hear it's in October Laugh

In recent years [In reply to] Can't Post

at least over here, they will try and avoid removing them if they can. But when they get as badly infected as my sons are, they will finally remove them. I'm just annoyed that it took so long to get it to this stage and he's had to suffer so much. He's had the added pressure of one of his teachers telling other staff members that in her opinion he's faking it to get out of handing in his school work. I took great pleasure in informing her of his operation date Evil Despite all the time off he's had he still has kept up with his school work and has still managed to be ranked 8th in his year group.

I've been getting study packs for him from his teachers whenever he's been off for more than a couple of days (which has been most times lately). So we're keeping him up to date study-wise. It was just getting him down so much, hated seeing my normally happy-go-lucky lad so unhappy.

Ether..... [In reply to] Can't Post

I still remember the Ether. The doctors (when i was 5 in 1955) put this mask on me and it burned like hell I went to fight it and i zonked out. Crazy (put x's in the eyes this time).
Your son will not have to deal with such things in this age. I wonder if they have remedied limiting the sore throat pain in some way. But as is it is, it has to be done. He will be in full swing without that terrible hindrance.

My congratulations to him kel, for doing so well being up against it like he was. Fortitude.

Ought to write a letter to the Board concerning the incompetency and insensitivity which resulted in a skewed and harmful bias toward your son. I would be all over it en force. Sue the muthers i say! Or perhaps sabor rattling would do it.

Better days are coming! Cheers!

" 'Fair lady Goldberry!' said Frodo at last, feeling his heart move with a joy that he did not understand. He stood as he had at times stood enchanted by fair elven-voices; but the spell that was now laid upon him was different: less keen and lofty was the delight, but deeper and nearer to mortal heart; marvellous and yet not strange."

Thankfully [In reply to] Can't Post

they don't use that anymore! Kel jnr would well and truly freak over that experience.

Well dear, there's more than one way to skin a cat, don't ya know WinkEvil

I sent the teacher concerned an email with an attached copy of the letter his GP had sent to his specialist requesting that he be moved up the list, saying it was for her information and I would let her know when we received confirmation of his operation date. She sent back a *very* contrite response, thanking me for letting her know and hoping that Kel jnr would be feeling better on the Monday. He'd been sent home from school, again, on the Monday of that week and ended up being off all week again.

She was also in the front office when I went in to pick up his work pack from his English teacher and the secretary there made a point of saying quite loudly, "I hope he's feeling better really soon, afterall, we all know he's NOT FAKING TONSILLITIS!" Suddenly I saw a woman who'd been chatting to other staff members, go scuttling out with her head well and truly bowed down. I think she was scared about facing me for some reason EvilAngelicWink
