Says in the book, if the eagles flew too close to men they'd be shot down

Because the men would think that they were after their sheep. The eagles didn't fly to Mordor because SAURON WOULD HAVE SEEN THEM and they needed to be stealthy or Sauron would have easily killed them. The reason the eagles finally fly to Mordor at the end is the same reason the men finally attack Mordor at the end, it was a desperate (near suicidal) last move to distract Sauron.

...if only because the question is a tiresome one often asked by fans of the movies who've never read the books. An explanation IS given, even though it's a bit tentative and poses a few possible inconsistencies. This gives me an idea for a thread in the reading room...

The eagles were busy far away, helping the Blue Wizards defeat the minions of Sauron, tying up legions of Sauron's troops, five dragons and a Balrog that would have otherwise been used to attack all along the coast, at Pelennor Fields, block the entrance to the paths of the dead, retake the Lonely Mountain, and otherwise make the Fellowship's efforts entirely moot.

I wouldn't want to carry Bombur any further than necessary! He's lucky they got him as far as they did! (Oh and if Gandalf had the eagles take Frodo all the way to Mordor...right to the doorstep into the mountain itself...just think how many less pages of bothersome text Tolkien would have had to have written!!)

The Lord of the Eagles would not take them anywhere near where men lived. "They would shoot at us with their great bows of yew," he said, "for they would think we were after their sheep. And at other times they would be right. No! we are glad to cheat the goblins of their sport, and glad to repay our thanks to you, but we will not risk ourselves for dwarves in the southward plains." The Hobbit Out of the Frying-Pan and into the Fire Here the Lord of the Eagles states his reason clearly. However there is a little more to it I think. The wizard and the eagle-lord appeared to know one another slightly, and even to be on friendly terms. As a matter of fact Gandalf, who had often been in the mountains, had once rendered a service to the eagles and healed their lord from an arrow-wound. The Hobbit Out of the Frying-Pan and into the Fire Gandalf had once helped them so they felt willing to help as a way to repay him. However Gandalf has more pressing matters in the South and states -
"I always meant to see you all safe (if possible) over the mountains," The Hobbit Queer Lodgings Therefore the Eagles were not obliged to take the dwarves any father than Gandalf was journeying with them.

What could the Dwarves offer the Eagles? And even then, like Welsh hero says, why would the Eagles want to get anywhere near, much less antagonize, a flying Dragon? As for LOTR, Gandalf's last words to the Fellowship *were* "Fly, you fools!"
****************************************** Once Gandalf dreamt he was a moth, a moth flitting and fluttering around, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn't know he was Gandalf. Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakably Gandalf. But he didn't know if he was Gandalf who had dreamt he was a moth, or a moth dreaming he was Gandalf. Between Gandalf and a moth there must be some distinction! But really, there isn't, because he's actually Olórin dreaming he's both Gandalf *and* a moth! -From Gandalfi: The Moth Dream

Why didn't Bilbo just decide to stay at home? Why didn't the trolls eat Bilbo when they caught him? Why didn't the goblins kill them first and ask questions afterwards? Why didn't the spiders just eat a dwarf or two right away? In stories - as in real life, if you think about it - things just happen the way they happen. Two paths are in front of you. You may choose A or B and whichever you choose will lead to a different set of consequences. Why do you make the choice? Sometimes you may not even know you have. The eagles carried the party to safety on the other side of the mountains because that's what they did. There are good reasons given in the book and a few extras suggested here but honestly? I reckon that someone who asks that sort of question of any story doesn't really care what the answer is - they just don't want to go along with the story.

As for LOTR, Gandalf's last words to the Fellowship *were* "Fly, you fools!" This is actually a mistranslation on the ancient author's part: Gandalf had a commercial endorsement contract with Ufûls, an airline run by Gwahir. Very profitable (and, thanks to the beacons, quite safe), but taking up much of the eagles' time. Gandalf's final words to the Fellowship were a last-second, contractually-obligated commercial entreaty: "Fly Ufûls!"

When do you come actross people/birds thats willing you help you that much? If i were an eagle I'd be annoyed if a bunch off guys whose life i just saved wanted me to carry them on my back even further making it a huge detour for me. Also, noone else really wanted to help the dwarves on their really stupid quest.

I cannot remember exactly where, but doesn't Tolkien also mention that the eagles objected to the insinuation that they could be used as "beasts of burden"? It might have been where Gandalf's body was rescued after fighting the Balrog, but I cannot remember for sure, but I do remember reading this somewhere.
Tauriel (as her hair catches during BO5A)- Ah, now I understand why you keep your beard so short, master Kili! Kili: Um, because it grows slowly? (glares at her for perceived insult) Tauriel: Because your arrows don't get tangled in your *^%*(^$%* beard every time you shoot! (more curses as it gets further tangled) Kili: Um, YEAH! That's it! That's why I keep my beard short! (strides off triumphantly with a huge grin on his face, still shooting arrows as the cursing and tangles continues behind him) Tauriel keeps fighting the tangles on the battlefield long after Dain takes the throne and Dale is rebuilt. Frodo takes the ring to Morder and once Sauron is defeated she FINALLY gets the last arrow out.

Until I realized I really, really don't care. Like dormouse said, you can ask the "Why don't they just..." question for practically any situation. Logic often doesn't work for stories. A bit like real life, really.

Anyone else disapoointed they left out the natural comedy that Tolkien included in the eagle scene?

I really wish they had included it. It would hvae been great to see Bilbo hanging off Dori's legs being held in the talons of an eagle. I hated the fact that the eagles were dropping the dwarfs onto the backs of other eagles instead of just swooping in and hauling them off. It would have ben fantastic to hear Bilbo yelling "my arms my arms!!" while dangling off Dori's legs with Dori yelling "my legs my legs!!" That would have been great. I think they over complicated the eagles rescue by adding all the Azog fighting Thorin stuff (which IMO made Thorin look totally weak) instead of just following the book a little closer as to the OP the eagle stayed away from the settlements of men for fear of being killed or shot at by arrows. The lord of the eagles tells this in the book

they didn't know of their quest, at least in AUJ (the film version) they didn't. They just saw the company and Gandalf surrounded and they took them to a safe drop off location. -Like what the lone eagle did with Gandalf in FOTR, the eagles are like a coast guard helicopter, they rescue you and drop you off at a safe location, not fight your battles or complete your life's mission.
take me down to the woodland realm where the trees are green and the elf women are pretty....Oh will you please take me home!!
