But of course! Greendragon!! [In reply to] Can't Post

I heard her sing in an old Greek church in the southern end of NYC the weekend of the FOTR's concert ar RCMH.
I really enjoyed that:).

''Sam put his ragged orc-cloak under his master's head, and covered them both with the grey robe of Lorien; and as he did so his thoughts went out to that fair land, and to the Elves, and he hoped that the cloth woven by their hands might have some virtue to keep them hidden beyond all hope in this wilderness of fear...But their luck held, and for the rest of that day they met no living or moving thing; and when night fell they vanished into the darkess of Mordor.'' - - -rotk, chapter III

Faerie contains many things besides elves and fays and besides dwarfs, witches, trolls, giants or dragons; it holds the seas, the sun, the moon, the sky; and the earth, and all things that are one in it: tree and bird, water and stone, wine and bread, and ourselves, mortal men, when we are enchanted."

Comma is just fine after Fishes! [In reply to] Can't Post

And really either way works for the gardeners line I think - it seems to work as the short version too; it doesn't really *sound* incomplete to me. You have an ear for getting the musical beat just right.

I will leave it to your beat discretion, with utmost trust, Official Anthem Director of Tolkenia, (and shiny new Aunt!) CoolWink

Is there a Tolkien topic that you have wanted to look into more deeply, and write about your thoughts on it? If so, we'd like to hear from you for the next TORn Amateur Symposium- coming in November. Happy writing!

How's this, E.D.? (And can I get a rosey-red apple from it?) [In reply to] Can't Post

Stout-hearted heroes travel with us as we explore Tolkienia
From homey hearths to unknown vistas far
Each dawn brings discovery for the roads go on and on
Beckoning our doors to ever rest ajar.

The last line has an extra syllable or beat. Is it still okay or does it need another revamp?

Here, catch! [In reply to] Can't Post

It's an Empire, or a Macoun (or any kind you like!).Cool

This one captures the rhythm just fine now, except for the first line--the original was a much closer fit to the melody on that line. If you don't mind--and if you leave out the "green," it actually fits perfectly. The new one is great--I love the "stout hearted" but it adds too many beats at the beginning of the phrase (you'd end up singing "stout-hearted heroes" all on the same pitch, which makes it sound like it's taking a long time to get the melody going), while "gallant" fits those two little "pick-up" notes at the beginning just right.

The new last line can be made to fit by singing "beckon" as the 2 quick pick-up notes and the "ing" at the beginning of the first main beat. And it's very natural to hold out the last syllable of "ajar" . A lot of this isn't only the number of beats, but where the natural accent of the words fall. If the accent pattern doesn't "go with" the natural rise and fall and accent pattern of the melody line, people end up singing the words in all different spots, and often have to sing several syllables very rapidly on one pitch just to catch up before the end of that line. It's more amazing to me all the time how very "speechlike" music is, both emotionally and in it's patterns. I even read somewhere that some scientists are beginning to think that singing of some type came before the spoken word.

Anyway, this is the best I can come up with, showing how the rhythm fits better with your original first line--but your new version's next 3 verses are great, and work just fine!

Beckon-ing our doors to ev----er rest a----jaaaaar.
and a One and Two and Three and Four and 5,6,7,8

Would it be O.K. this way?

by Daniel our chosen standard? Smile

Also, does anybody want to weigh in about structure and all?

I hope to start a new thread tonight or tomorrow morning about constructing our Town Square poetry monument and bulletin board, and creating a National Seal (and building parks and swimming pools, and maybe having a marketplace with yummy fruit and veggies!).

Anyway, here's your chance to comment on the State of our State!Laugh

Hmm--interesting! [In reply to] Can't Post

I was thinking of sort of 2 aspects of this anyway: 1) designing a stone monument (posting drawings?) and 2) the other was the actual poetry plus the bulletin board.

I think maybe what we could do is have the monument engraved with a set number of poems, like the one you wrote, maybe 4-6? And the "poetry bulletin board" could maybe be the one on the Fan Art board, where it probably belongs anyway. Just some preliminary thoughtsSmile.

The Final Draft: Please give your opionions, and also the Final Flag Vote! [In reply to] Can't Post

All Hail, Tolkienia!

Chorus

All Hail to Tolkienia,
Let us all proclaim our love,
Of our glorious suburban banks and braes.
Here, just south a bit from Chelmsford,
Tooks play golf upon the greensward;
All hail to Tolkenia, thee we praise!

Verse (Tune I)

Here in South Woodham Ferrers we are safe from changeling bears,
As we amble past the trees of Arwen's Grove.
We pick up a lunch at Curlew's, sail off from Eyotts club,
To navigate the falls of Dimrill Stairs.

Chorus

All Hail to Tolkienia,
Let us all proclaim our love,
Of our glorious suburban banks and braes.
Here, just south a bit from Chelmsford
Tooks play golf upon the greensward;
All hail to Tolkenia, thee we praise!

Verse (Tune II)

Drawn by it's mellow byways,
We meander on our bikes,
To discover nooks and crannies
Or adventure that We likes (Precious).

Chorus

All Ha-il to Tolkienia,
Let us all proclaim our love,
Of our glorious suburban banks and braes.
Here, just south a bit from Chelmsford
Tooks play golf upon the greensward;
All hail to Tolkenia, thee we praise!

Verse (Tune II)

In our gracious Tolkienia
We do not shout "Ere! Oo are you?"
We greet each other with warm hugs
Around our big barbecue

Verse (Tune I)

We do truly love our vittles well, in our little Tolkien town.
Warm fresh bread and ale, and apples do abound.
We all enjoy our tasty fishes, fresh from the stream.
With Gard'ners and their 'taters held in high esteem!

Chorus

All Ha-il to Tolkienia,
Let us all proclaim our love,
Of our glorious suburban banks and braes.
Here, just south a bit from Chelmsford
Tooks play golf upon the greensward;
All hail to Tolkenia, thee we praise!

2 Verses (Tune II)

There is one by name of Tolkien,
With his heart the world adorned.
A spirit of his kind, unique,
Among all authors born.

Profound, entwining meaning,
summoned by simple call of horn.
In Middle-earth, all led as one
By humble ranger, Aragorn.

Chorus

All Ha-il to Tolkienia,
Let us all proclaim our love,
Of our glorious suburban banks and braes.
Here, just south a bit from Chelmsford
Tooks play golf upon the greensward;
All hail to Tolkenia, thee we praise!

Verse (Tune I)

Gallant heroes travel with us, as we explore Tolkienia
From homey hearths to unknown vistas far
Each dawn brings discovery, for the roads go on and on
Beckoning our doors to ever rest ajar.

Chorus

All Ha-il to Tolkienia,
Let us all proclaim our love,
Of our glorious suburban banks and braes.
Here, just south a bit from Chelmsford
Tooks play golf upon the greensward;
All hail to Tolkenia, thee we praise!

Verse (Tune I)

The end of day is a special time, in our little Tolkien town
In our Fellowship, a hum of happy sound.
At dusk we stand together, beneath the darkening sky,
All eyes on heaven as Earandil glimmers by.

Verse Tune III

Then we saw it in Crickhollow and in winding Shirebourn Vale,
Some Ferrers folk were singing O Elbereth Gilthoniel!
Shall we join in lifting voices to good Varda high above,
Shall we praise the Legendarium, the object of our love?

Verse Tune II

We join the chorus singing,
Circling Gandalf’s Ride’s detour,
Ever knowing of one truth:
We adore our Professor’s lore!

Chorus

On the breeze that follows sunset
We can hear the bright refrain,
Hail Tolkienia! Tolkienia! Hooray!
Hail the world-inventing dreamer
O Eärendil Elenion Ancalima!
All hail to Tolkienia, thee we praise!
All hail to Tolkienia, thee we praise!

Phase II: Nation Building! ;) [In reply to] Can't Post

We are now taking suggestions on our next phase. I'd love suggestions on all sorts of things we might want in our Beloved Land. I'll be gone for 3 days, so I'd ,love it if you all took over and brainstormed!

One thought has been a Poetry Monument in the town square, where we could pick 4 poems or so to engrave thereon. And a poetry bulletin board, but that already seems to have happened in the Arts board. But! we could take design suggestions for said "great Hall."

Here's some other projects that might be fun to design, talk about or just write up n our Chamber of Commerce description if we don't want actual pictures of them.

Here goes in no particular order:

Swimming pool

National seal

National postage stamps

National bird, plant, animal, tree

Ent reserve

Music hall

Stable for the one Shiriff's one pony.

...
...

Enjoy!

How about a pipe? Tolkien himself, hobbits, dwarves, wizards and men, the good folks of ME, have all been observed with one. Something very homey and comforting about it as a symbol. Perhaps also incorporate a smoke ring or two?

Ooh! [In reply to] Can't Post

Lovely, lovely, Daniel! Smile

And for anyone wondering why a dragon...one of the earliest things to influence Tolkien was when he wrote a story with a "green great dragon", and his mother told him it had to be "great green dragon" to be proper, which made him start wondering why....

And there's his statement: "I desired dragons with a profound desire...". To him, dragons are basic to Faerie. Thus a dragon on a flag in his honor is most appropriate.

But I suppose a pipe in one of the vacant fields might be appropriate...hm, now I'm wondering, that would make two fields remaining, what symbols might go in those?
