A Crowded House parody, in tribute to Neil Finn Can't Post

Here is a parody of Crowded House, Don’t Dream Its Over, my tribute to that band’s frontman and “Song of the Lonely Mountain” lyricist and performer, Neil Finn.

It is set during the final build-up to the climactic BoFAs in The Hobbit, starting from the chapter from which this parody gets its title:

THE GATHERING OF THE CLOUDS

There’s a kingdom within,
There are armies without,
Tryin’ to snatch the treasure of our forebears up.

There’s a battle ahead,
Many battles are lost,
You might never reach the end of the road if you stand here with me.

Hey now, hey now,
Don’t dream it’s over!
Hey now, hey now,
When the clouds close in,
They’ll come, they’ll come,
There’ll be a war between us,
We know they won’t win!

Now I’m searching within
For a stone, I’m the sleuth,
That possession is causing me suspicion but there’s no proof.
Sent the raven today,
Summoned kindred our way,
Then the burglar turns over, to my steaming rage.

Hey now, hey now,
Don’t dream it’s over!
Hey now, hey now,
When the clouds close in,
They’ll come, they’ll come,
There’ll be a war between us,
We know they won’t win!

Now we’re outside again
To the beat of a drum,
And we’re standing with Men and with Elves for our part,
There’s a shadow come near,
And they’ve Wargs in their train,
Got to band together for liberation and relief.

Hey now, hey now,
Don’t dream it’s over!
Hey now, hey now,
When the clouds close in,
They’ll come, they’ll come,
There’ll be a war between us,
We know they won’t win!

Don't let them win
Hey now, hey now
Hey now
Hey now, hey now
Don't let them win
Hey now, hey now
Don't let them win
Hey now, hey now….

Wow! What a tribute [In reply to] Can't Post

This really lends itself to your subject. I have this sudden urge to go off and read the battle of the 5 armies right now!

I haven't been on the boards much for awhile, so I may have missed some of these, but I haven't run across any of your parodies lately. You're back with a bang!Smile

Thanks Ethel :-) [In reply to] Can't Post

*bow*

I'd actually meant to do a tribute/parody of that song for a while, months ago, but it had me stuck. Finally yesterday, I had a eureka moment and it finally started flowing. The key was finding the right character's perspective and setting.

It's true, I haven't posted a parody in a while. The latest one I posted was the Henry V parody in the Shakespeare thread in Hobbit Movie Discussion board.

A parody I posted before that was buried in a thread and didn't get much attention, Gaffers Delight (Sugar Hill Gang, Rapper's Delight) about taters. The one I posted before that was Sweet King Thranduil (Sweet Tranvestite), which was quite a while ago.

Lovely R-T! [In reply to] Can't Post

Was quite happy to see you had posted something and couldn't wait to read it! (and thank you for the other links, had some fun looking them over again - I do find myself giggling along to Sweet King Thranduil quite a bit anyway!) WinkCool

Is there a Tolkien topic that you have wanted to look into more deeply, and write about your thoughts on it? If so, we'd like to hear from you for the next TORn Amateur Symposium- coming in November. Happy writing!

Loved it! [In reply to] Can't Post

Great parody! It fit really well with the Dwarves. I think many of us on here have needed something like this, it's been rather argumentive. Crazy

Thorin V ! Who knew :D [In reply to] Can't Post

And "I'm just the sweet, top Sinda" and "Or perhaps for a victual,
You intruded a little" not to mention the Rap extraordinaire! LaughLaughLaugh

That Shakespeare is tour de force. I'm still trying to get my jaw off the floor.

I know how these things get hidden/buried too. Mine are a lot shorter (and less inventive!) so they get lost a lot. But it is such fun to find those rhythms and hear the words start to pop in to the right places (although sometime I go through the whole alphabet to find a rhyme!). Here's one from a long time ago before you were here http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=262381#262381--not a parody of any song, but a parody of a Balrog discussion (I fear to reveal my own position! Shocked).

So how 'bout maybe popping in to the thread below and adding a verse to our new "National Anthem"? The more composers and verses the merrier!Smile

I'm glad you thought well of it. I was quite happy to find Mr. Finn a Dwarven-related tribute, given his proven devotion to the subject matter. Smile I'll try to post more if I can, I hope it helps! Evil

Awesome! [In reply to] Can't Post

The Balrog debate never gets old. Thanks for showing me that, nicely done! Smile Thanks about my other linked stuff too. I wonder if you might consider adding to the Sugar Hill Gang one Wink

I've finally gotten around to checking out your Tolkienia anthem thread. How awesome, you really do come up with amazing ideas and creative projects!

At first it looked like the anthem was all done and filled up, but you said the more composers and verses the merrier, so I'd better give it a try!... I might need a few days though....Smile

Ah! I have a Rap allergy, but [In reply to] Can't Post

here's a try at the next bit, which as far as I can determine is this in the original:

I said I can't wait 'til the end of the week
When I'm rapping to the rhythm of a groovy beat
And attempt to raise your body heat
Just blow your mind so that you can't speak
And do a thing but a rock and shuffle your feet
And let it change up to a dance called the freak
And when ya finally do come in to your rhythmic beat
Rest a little while so ya don't get weak
I know a man named Hank
He has more rhymes than a serious bank
So come on Hank sing that song
To the rhythm of the boogie da bang bang da bong

My attempt (I'm out of breath by the end. These guys must use circular breathing!CrazyLaugh)

Well, I simply can't wait till the end of the feast,
When the ale and the puddin' make my tummy speak
and attempt to raise my heavy feet
to dance after dinner and quit stuffin' my beak
But I can't do a thing but just shuffle my feet
and let it change up to a Springle-ring like a freak
and when you all come in and join with a rhythmic beat
I gotta rest a little bit while some Tums I seek
I know a man named Nob
Who drinks more wine than he spends on his job
so come on Nob, sing that tune
to the rhythm of the deedle-dum-ov-er-the moon

That song [In reply to] Can't Post

by C.H. is one of my fave songs from that era. I've even enjoyed performing/singing it. A friend of mine complimented me by saying my voice was similar, so that might be why I have enjoyed covering their songs so much.

Thanks gramma, I'm so glad you enjoyed it. *bow* Smile
