Stupid idea, but Can't Post

What if the introduction of all these new subplots was to make the audience feel like Bilbo? With the many subplots acting as the dwarves, whom Bilbo did not invite or expect. Just a thought.

It does somewhat parallel what Freeman said in one of the press junket interviews: That the audience identifies the most with Bilbo and he's the one character that the audience sees the film through. So you may not be far off the mark there.
