Walk to Rivendell and Beyond: There and Back Again Challenge! Can't Post

Welcome to the Walk to Rivendell, TORn walkers, bikers, lurkers and all! We've had a happening of special magnificence here: grammaboodawg has become the second TORn walker to complete the There and Back Again solo challenge, joining silneldor (hi, sil! *waves*). Way to go, gramma!

In honor of your achievement and recognition of the work you've undertaken to make another mileage chart, and by special arrangement with the current Mayor of Hobbiton, Ms Arkenstone 'Arky' Brandybuck-Took, I hereby present you with the key to the, er, town. Well, we think it might be one of the spare keys to the back room at the Green Dragon. Actually, no one's tried it to be sure, though. Come to think of it, let's have a round of everybody's favorites to celebrate! The Mayor's buying!

There and Back Again
Group Challenge Progress

Miles reported the last two weeks: 218.7
Cumulative miles: 15200.5
Miles along the journey: 1182.89
Miles out of the Lonely Mountain: 215.89

Poor, soggy Bilbo is still skirting around Mirkwood with Gandalf and Beorn this week. In the rain. A week before Christmas.

My progress:
Miles covered the past two weeks: 13
Cumulative miles: 653
Goal: There and Back Again!

Not as many miles as I'd hoped, but Beamer and I had tons of fun rafting and hiking in southern Colorado with our troop, and we added another hike this week up in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Beamer's progress:
Miles covered the past two weeks: 13
Cumulative miles: 633
Goal: Group Challenge

Happy Crispus Attucks Day all! [In reply to] Can't Post

Here's my pathetic totals since last post.

Since last: 14.75
Total: 282.76
This Challenge: 202.66
To go: 764.34

Had I really been on the quest, the trolls would have eaten me.

'There is some woe that lies upon you... Why will you not tell me more?'
'For that woe is past,' said Galadriel; 'and I would take what joy is here left, untroubled by memory. And maybe there is woe enough yet to come, thought still hope may seem bright.'

Congratulations gramma! [In reply to] Can't Post

Although, since I haven't been in this thread lately, I don't know what she's done. But I'm sure it was of special magnificence, knowing gramma.

I have some miles of my own to report. Since it's been a long time, I'll put them in this way:
Feb - May miles I kept track of in a very haphazard way - 96.1
May miles since I got my nifty new pedometer on the 28th - 19.4.
June miles up until two weeks ago - 85.7
Miles for the last two weeks - 60.0

So add that to the 12.5 I posted back in January and that makes a total of 273.7.

I really like this new pedometer that we got as part of a fitness challenge at work. It's called a Fitbit, and it syncs to the computer so that I don't have to keep track - the computer does it for me. When I did the original Eowyn Challenge, all those many years ago, I carefully filled out a record sheet and marked off my journey on maps. It was fun and kept me motivated. Now, it seems too hard to do that, and I'm grateful technology is there to step in and help. If I could just get them to add some middle-earth milestones, I'd be in heaven. I have no idea where I am on the journey.

"That is one thing that Men call 'hope.' Amdir we call it, 'looking up.' But there is another which is founded deeper. Estel we call it, that is 'trust.' It is not defeated by the ways of the world, for it does not come from experience, but from our nature and First Being. If we are indeed the Eruhin, the Children of the One, then He will not suffer Himself to be deprived of His own, not by any enemy, not even by ourselves. This is the last foundation of estel, which we keep even when we contemplate the End. Of all His designs the issue must be for His children's joy."

Well done gramma!! [In reply to] Can't Post

Congrats to you! Completing the solo challenge!!! Wow! Probably take me 10 years..... Tongue

Hey gramma - I told my team at work about the 3-month challenges to get people moving at your work that you told me about a few weeks ago - and we've got a 2-month challenge started to get people away from their desks at lunchtime - Started July 2nd and will finish at the end of August. We put up a board in our kitchen and I'm happy to say - people are taking the challenge and writing in their lunchtime walks! Finally getting them to take a break and get moving. I work for a very busy software company and we can all forget to take a break - eating lunch at our desks has become the norm...which is a bad thing!.... So my fellow teammates up here in the Great White North send you a big Thank You!

Weekend is here and we've got a lot of rain in the forecast! Not much good for walking.....I have to figure something else out!

I'm still at: Climbing steadily - Ponies. 4 miles per day (wish I did 4 miles a day!!!)

Miles covered since my last post: 11
Cumulative miles: 84.5
Goal: There and Back again!

Cheers!

"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Gramma, what a great accomplishment! [In reply to] Can't Post

And many thanks for the words of encouragement on all of our respective journeys.

I am on vacation this week and can't tabulate my miles for the past month, but I am somewhere between Rivendell and Hobbiton on the the return journey. I am looking forward to sharing a drink of two with you and sil at the Green Dragon very soon!

Congrats again and have a great weekend!

I'm so happy to see you!!! So at 273.7 miles on Bilbo's journey, you've passed Weathertop and are on your way to see some Trolls ;) Well done!! Excellent!

Ahhh... my great achievement (and sil's) is that I've finished the journey to the Lonely Mountain and came home via Beorn's and Rivendell. There and Back Again, as some would say ;)

See you on the Road, m'dear!

Wow! Really??? :D [In reply to] Can't Post

That's AWESOME! That sounds like a perfect program for your people. We just closed out our year's walk (runs July-June). My job also has the hazard of not moving from the desk for hours at a time... so I hear ya on the dangers of lunch at the desk.

Rain does put a damper on walking, fersher... but I'm betting you'll keep moving one way or another ;)

Take care!

oh dear, this is really late! [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been contantly on the go since thursday and this was my first chance to update my miles (a canoeing trip being one reason!). But anyway, my adventures last week consisted of plenty of walking and yard work for my grandparents.

Miles covered this week: 15.9
Cumulative miles: 245.47
Goal: There and back again!

Still plodding along in the lone-lands, on our way to see some hungry trolls pretty soon. Yikes!

And I was excited because I ordered a pair of New Balance walking shoes & only had to pay $12 for them (I had coupons). Now I just need some new sports bras & I'm ready to go. Not sure where I'm going though.Wink
