goblins in Erebor

Does anyone think that we may see any residents dwelling in the lonely mountain, other than Smaug? It has been abandoned for many years know, so there could be some kind of creatures living in there like perhaps goblins. I had always imagined goblins living in Erebor, and perhaps the dwarves may encounter some and have a skirmish? The only reason I could imagine them ot livng in the mountain, is because of them being scared of Smaug. Who knows what we may find in the mountain other than Smaug?

Certainly the goblins from the Grey Mountains have scouted the place over the years. It's entirely possible that you could encounter scouting parties from time to time. However, this takes place in a very specific time after they escape from the elves and are looking fot the door. Will they want more distractions in the film before they encounter Smau? or is it needed before the dragon's death? My estimation is no, I doubt we'll see any permanent residents.

I doubt that Smaug would have tolerated tenants

The dragon would certainly have had no use for sneaky goblins around his hoard.

Another opportunity for more action, the exact ingredient these movies seem to be lacking... If we have orcs in laketown, why not erebor? : PS Cant wait to find out if Orlando's mojo is still on...surf riding down Erebor's side hills...

Bilbo should encounter a bunch of orcs when he returns to the Shire. That way they can pay homage to the Scouring of the Shire and have an action packed ending as opposed to the boring ending in the book where Gandalf and Balin go to visit him.

Dragons are not social creatures; they don't share and they don't play well with others. I think any goblins who thought to move in there would have soon been toast. So, umm...no.

And not Lobelia? We'll have enough Orcs outside of Lonely Mountain. We don't need them inside as well.

The company shouldn't see any Goblins until they appear at the BOFA. That's kind of the point - they are so busy thinking about the dragon, the treasure and their own greed/pride, that they've completely forgotten about the real enemy - who turns up unexpectedly out of the blue. Having goblins at Lake Town or anywhere near the dwarves earlier on would negate this - Mr Jackson is far too competent to allow such a thing.
