Antony Sher cast as Thrain for DoS? Can't Post

I was very intrigued to read the following passage in this month's Empire, seemingly revealing the casting of renowned actor Sir Antony Sher as Thrain:

"We will examine in some depth the relationship between Thorin and his father Thrain, who mysteriously absconded from the battlefield at the gates of Moria - a flashback being expanded by the splinter unit on Stage J, where Antony Sher's Thrain is side-stepping Orc blows."

If this is indeed THE Antony Sher - and I can't see why Empire would mention him otherwise - then this is certainly big news. It hints at a sizable role for Thrain in this film given Sher's reputation. Furthermore, he is a brilliant actor. With all due respect to Mike Mizrahi and/or Thomas Robins, it suggests that the role of Thrain will now be extremely demanding. Of course, it creates a slight inconsistency with AUJ, but I'm very excited to think of how big the role will be now and what an actor of Sher's calibre can bring to it. With the mention that the relationship between Thorin and Thrain will be examined 'in some depth' one wonders about the possibilities. And intriguingly, Richard Armitage has acted with Sher before:

http://thearmitageeffect.wordpress.com/tag/antony-sher/

Hopefully Empire aren't wrong (I doubt it), or there's another Antony Sher (a stuntman?) I've confused him with. But the fact they're seemingly re-filming the Azanulbizar sections suggests he has been recast. Does this mean they'll refilm the stuff with 'old' Thrain in Dol Guldur now? Who knows.

EDIT: I've found some corroborating evidence on twitter that it is indeed Sir Antony Sher:

Sher is a great Shakespearean actor, [In reply to] Can't Post

originally born in South Africa but trained in the UK where he made his name as a memorable Richard III and is now known worldwide. " For my generation, the definitive Richard was Antony Sher, scuttling crab-like across the stage." (Telegraph critic)

Thank you very much for pointing this out, Shagrat. My hope is that this means that PJ will put a lot more emphasis on characterisation and interaction than he did in AUJ. Why employ such a famous stage actor otherwise?

Another thing [In reply to] Can't Post

For the purposes of continuity, I wonder if the introductory shot of Thrain in AUJ will be replaced with a shot of Antony Sher's Thrain in the EE? The other scenes featuring Thrain they could probably get away with leaving as they are - indeed, they'd surely be too time-consuming to shoot again.

I also wondered about this. [In reply to] Can't Post

But I think it will remain an anomaly as in LotR where Ian Holm doesn't find the Ring in the same way as MF in AUJ. I think PJ will go on the assumption that the regular film-goer will not notice the change and who knows how alike the actors will look once the make-up and prosthetics are on?

Underneath all that prosthetic ... is anyone going to notice? [In reply to] Can't Post

I had to good Thrain to remember what he looked like. Assuming the prosthesis are the same (or as a good match as they can be), is anyone going to notice? The shot of Thrain in AUJ is fleeting.

True [In reply to] Can't Post

But for it might be an idea for the EE, given that the more discerning fan will probably be watching these versions of the films from here on.

Thank you! [In reply to] Can't Post

I've only seen the movie twice, so I couldn't remember what he looked like (though I did kind of remember a fleeting shot in the prologue). Thanks for finding that for me.

I wonder if that shot will be replace in the EE (since we know other things are being added to the prologue).

No problem [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm guessing and hoping the look of Thrain will be the same, but it would be nice to see Sher's version of the character established quickly.

I wonder why he was recast [In reply to] Can't Post

Surely the original actor could have returned for these new scenes, especially if it's just more Azanulbizar stuff (which I'm not looking forward to as it's already been butchered enough).

I don't think it will be [In reply to] Can't Post

The casting of an actor as renowned and talented as Sher suggests that the role of Thrain in DoS will be substantially bigger than many of us previously thought. Presumably they wanted someone with more gravitas for the role, with the deepest respect to the previous actors in the role.

I'll trust you [In reply to] Can't Post

as I've never heard of the actor in question before. While I'm nervous about more added backstory by Jackson, I'll hope for the best and hope this is an excellent character scene. *fingers crossed*

You don't have to take my word for it [In reply to] Can't Post

A quick search of Sher on google reveals how celebrated he is. Of course, one hopes PJ doesn't waste his talent, but I can't see why he'd cast Sher at this late stage if he didn't intend for him to have some juicy scenes.

Youngish Thrain/Older Thrain [In reply to] Can't Post

We may be looking at something like this. One actor for Youngish Thrain in Erebor and Sher as Older Thrain in DOS.

Very curious.. [In reply to] Can't Post

I for one would love to see Sher in the role-he's a brilliant actor who I'm sure would bring a great depth to the otherwise rather insane father of Thorin.

Really Interesting [In reply to] Can't Post

Thrain and Thror never spoke in AUJ so I wonder if Sher's surprise casting of Thror means the character will be greatly expanded upon and will have a speaking role. I hope they keep the same basic design, like Daniel said no ones really going to be able to tell under all the prosthetics.

I'm not sure then whether this is a casting announcement or not. If they spent a lot of time and work with Mizrahi it would seem strange to replace him in the re-shoots. Crazy

If Mizrahi has committed himself to other projects then there may have been no choice but to recast the part.

Perhaps [In reply to] Can't Post

But I have to think they've made a conscious choice to 'upgrade' with the casting of Sher. Again I don't mean to be cruel, but Sher is something of an acting heavyweight and it's odd that they should just cast him as a convenient replacement.
