Plus that Link from Zelda looks doesn`t differentiate her from...Link from Zelda. And Eowyn wasn`t a real warrior woman because warriorship wasn`t her vocation, unlike Tauriel. Eowyn wasn`t in military. She went to one battle and that was it. She became a doctor right after. OTOH, Tauriel is a military woman. I`m just disappointed that they couldn`t give such a character more distinctive look and interesting personality, for this "ruthless killer in love with her prince" thing is the most laughable cliche.

Notice how different our lovely lady Éowyn is to Tauriel?

Éowyn is a true warrior lady, a shield maiden. She doesn't have this feeling of a male given boobs and a feminine name, and then called female character. Unfortunately the way they sell Tauriel makes her sound somewhat like that. Éowyn never loses her femininity, nor is seen weaker for it, and yet she has a deep, realistic personality unconnected to her gender and romantic relationships.

Of course Eowyn wasn't actually a part is the military, but you know what I mean. She's the warrior lady of the stories, and I'd hate for her role to be lessened simply because a made-up character is suddenly kicking butt in the exact same way. That's why I like her also having a bow. As for her looking like Robin Hood, I like the look, but I also hope she wears something else to the BoFA. There's no need for the elves to wear the same thing in their home environment as what they wear to war.

Eowyn > Tauriel. They had Eowyn in the Trilogy, who was just fine. Why make Tauriel for The Hobbit. The mind boggles.

I won't repeat all that you said about Eowyn, but I will say I'm hopeful for Tauriel. It's so possible for her to be a wonderful character. Please just don't let her be a bunch of cliches.

A/A are the romance of the story but there will be a made-up romance just like there will be a made-up warrior woman. Obviously nobody who made-her up was concerend that she shouldn`t steal the spotlight from _________(insert canon character and/or canon romance). In fact, I`m willing to bet they are hoping she and her romance will become more popular than those from LOTR.

And Iluvatar spoke to Ulmo, and said: 'Seest thou not how here in this little realm in the Deeps of Time Melkor hath made war upon thy province? He hath bethought him of bitter cold immoderate, and yet hath not destroyed the beauty of thy fountains, nor of my clear pools. Behold the snow, and the cunning work of frost! Melkor hath devised heats and fire without restraint, and hath not dried up thy desire nor utterly quelled the music of the sea. Behold rather the height and glory of the clouds, and the everchanging mists; and listen to the fall of rain upon the Earth! And in these clouds thou art drawn nearer to Manwe, thy friend, whom thou lovest.

I'm just holding out hope that she doesn't lessen the other canonical characters and that her role is tastefully done.

But I have to say she looks pretty cool! Like a female, red haired Robin Hood.

Out of 30 hours of footage of an epic fantasy saga, all you saw was urine and womens cleavage in your face. which are what....5.7 minutes our of those 30 hours? I dare say, youre the pervert A bit unfair no? Sean bean, mark addy, charles dance in a porno? :p :p Are real people more clichéd than the pretty, dressed in white guys who get together to fight the ugly, dressed in black, with horns and with terrible dental problems, eternal bad guys? I know people who cant take lotr seriously because of this...and they laughed at it, sadly...but at least they saw it until the end :p The main reason for this storys success, both the books and the show mainly lies with the characters. Female and male. Thats what people talk about. How much they are drawn in by them. How much they love them, or hate them. They are anything but predictable or static. Watch the whole thing . I promise you, it will surprise you. It does require some amount of dedication. Heck, i feel i ve been wrong all along about certain characters ...and i love having the tales, as it were turned on me. Thats the mark of good storyteling and interesting characters. I didnt like BBCs Sherlock Holmes from the eightes at first...but after a while...i fell in love.

Because the first hour and half was so entirely off-putting. It didn't feel worth turning my face from the screen and muting the voice all the time. When it got to the random "I teach you to have sex to make your husband love you" scene.... urgh. There are other good shows out there, and I don't have to suffer watching brother and sister doing it doggy style for it. Right now I'm utterly in love with the Hannibal tv series. I love every aspect of it. The best thing on tv atm, so captivating. Also, Tolkien's use of tropes is completely different, because Tolkien re-created mythologies. His characters are expressions of those mythic elements. Martin is supposed to create deconstructions who feel like normal humans. And I told you not to read, you silly you!

I find myself captivated by the characters Martin has created in a way that I never felt about Tolkien's characters. As far as prose is concerned, Tolkien is the superior writer, but I never get the feeling that Tolkien's "good guys" are in any danger, because Tolkien operated from a moralist type of standpoint - you just know the "good guys" or "faithful" are going to win every time. Martin, on the other hand, has created what I find to be a much more realistic world. Sure, there is a fair amount of rape and beheadings and stuff like that, but it's based on medieval society, which was a lot more brutal of a time than most people seem to realize. I understand that some people are too squeamish for that kind of stuff, but to write Martin off as a hack because he depicts lots of graphic violence totally ignores all of the things he does right.

Seriously who saw that last episode coming?! (besides book readers). We all know Tolkien's characters are perfectly safe and that is why certain aspects of GoT is unrivaled. The sex and stuff is not bad at all at least they are sticking to the book!

I actually read the first book after having heard so much hype, and felt like it was using gratuitous sex and violence and perversion to keep people interested, kinda like a freak show. The psychological states of the characters, especially female and children characters, were not at all convincing, so it simply did not work for me. AUJ, with all its silliness, is all in good fun, with a real moral core.

Martin has absolutely no qualms about turning the entire story on it's head, and I think he uses those types of moments in just the right amount (sparingly). Martin does get a little carried away sometimes with the constant branching off plot-lines, but I don't mind so much because his characters and their interactions are just so damn interesting.

if you want. I have no problem with that but I'm on the other side of the fence. I'm ready to camp out again for The Hobbit: DoS panel at Comic-Con and see the it at midnight. I'm very "meh" about season finale, season 4, and you couldn't pay me to camp out for their panel at Comic-Con. I want to comment as well on your posts about the two worlds. For me Middle-earth is leaps and bounds better than the world Martin has created. I'm again on the other side of the fence and say that Middle-earth along with the characters in it pull me in and have kept me in it for years. I just don't feel that way about the world Martin created. Any character you feel the slightest bit of attachment to is sure to die and the bad guys are always getting the best of situations. For me personally Martin created a world that feels like a sad cheap rip off of Middle-earth. He has but he labels it as fantasy. Its more like historical fiction to be honest and it should be labeled as much. I live in the real world and I love stuff like Middle-earth because it is fantasy (that feels real mind you) allowing you to escape what's going on. I don't need to see or read what I can see in the local news/read in the local papers. I love history and find Medival history interesting but there is a difference in reading what happened compared to some of the soft porn GoT episodes turn out. The violence doesn't bother me much at all (I do think they go a bit far at times) so that is never really a big issue. Maybe calling him a hack is too much but he might not be too far off a horny adolescent boy.

AUJ, with all its silliness, is all in good fun, with a real moral core. This is what I mean about Tolkien's characters never really being in danger. It's always the morally grey or immoral characters who die, the shiny white knights in Tolkien's tales never get so much as a scratch on them. Maybe good to teach lessons to young kids, but not at all realistic. Martin's characters are a million times more convincing than Tolkien's are, IMO.
