Glad to hear you've taken the plunge. The first post is the hardest - after that many find it hard to stop!

As another newbie to this board - but not to online fandoms - it is intimidating reading many of the threads. It's *always* hard jumping into a messageboard, especially if you feel you're an ardent fan, but don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of the topics being discussed. From browsing different threads, I can honestly say I haven't seen any short or snappy comments to newbies. I've survived tough messageboards - ask me about my fellow Trek fans! What's tough is taking the leap to post and then not seeing any replies, however innocuous, because it doesn't really encourage further participation.

you don't get replies, you can always see that your post has been opened and how many times - there's a number that sits alongside your nick on the right side of the page. Welcome to TORN, Bella Gamgee. :)
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. Just curious, does this also work in flat mode? That's something I've wondered for a while now.
"...not till now have I understood the tale of your people and their fall. As wicked fools I scorned them, but I pity them at last. For if this is indeed, as the Eldar say, the gift of the One to Men, it is bitter to receive." -Arwen Undómiel

in Flat mode, it marks each reply to the thread with one view when you open the thread itself. So it sort of assumes that you've read every post in the thread whether you have or not, whereas those using Threaded simply add one view per post they view. So you'll sometimes have more "views" than actual "reads", especially if a lot of Flat readers re-open the thread frequently to check for new replies while it's active.

That's pretty much what I had assumed.

It usually takes us a great amount of restraint to NOT reply to a thread, so no worries. But I know what you mean. It's like walking in as a stranger to a room where everyone knows everyone else, and you wonder what to say, and if anyone will answer you if you strike up a conversation. Message boards mimic real life. But most of us are pretty hobbity and welcoming, so I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Thanks Ataahua and Curious G! Yes, messageboards do tend to mimic real life, but being quite hobbity myself, I expect to feel very comfortable.
