Apparently, my memory isn't quite as good as I thought. The story isn't in comics form as I believed. Instead, it is a somewhat condensed version of "Riddles in the Dark" (no mention of Bilbo's brass buttons flying off of his waistcoat, for instance) with a number of monochrome illustrations by Lester Abrams (eight of them in this issue).

There is a great resemblance to the character designs used in the Rankin/Bass animated film, but there are significant differences as well. Gollum looks much the same, rather froggish, but his feet are much more paddle-like (almost like fins) than in the animated version. Now I am wondering if the comic-strip panels that I can still remember were something that appeared a few years later in an issue of TV Guide, when the animated special was being promoted. They would still have had nothing to do with the Eclipse collected graphic novel that was published many years later.
