*Ro wanders in carrying the book Dragon-Riddling for Dummies* Salutations, oh ye quiz-takers, and welcome to Week 15 of the Short Attention Span Theatre quizzes. This week we are covering Chapter 12, Inside Information. Once again, we need to don our flame-proof suits (we seem to need these a lot) so we can follow Bilbo safely, and I strongly suggest brushing up on your skills at riddling with dragons. They’re a wily lot, and Smaug worse than most! And you know the rules: this quiz is CLOSED BOOK, meaning peaking, sneaking, or otherwise cheating is NOT ALLOWED. Keep your eyes on your OWN quiz (at least until you’ve posted your answers)! Anyone even suspected of cheating will be handed over to Smaug for an old-fashioned dragon-style BBQ. Questions worth one point each, and quiz closes in three days. Fair enough? Off you go then! *Ro tiptoes down the tunnel after Bilbo* 1. Which Dwarf accompanied Bilbo a bit of the way down the tunnel (on Bilbo’s first journey down the tunnel)? 2. What did Bilbo steal from Smaug’s pile of treasure and take back up the tunnel to the Dwarves? 3. What key piece of information did Bilbo discover when Smaug rolled over to show his underbelly? 4. Fill in the blanks (two words): “ ‘Never laugh at ____ _____, Bilbo you fool!’ he said to himself…” 5. Bilbo returned to the Dwarves after his conversation with Smaug, and they all sat in the little grassy bay discussing, amongst other things, dragon slaying. Bilbo grew uneasy; what did he then urge them to do? **************** Answers & Results for Quiz #14 posted here as soon as I can!

Bilbo returned to the Dwarves after his conversation with Smaug, and they all sat in the little grassy bay discussing, amongst other things, dragon slaying. Bilbo grew uneasy; what did he then urge them to do? go inside the secret passageway and shut the door. or pilates. i forget. cheers --- .
aka. fili orc-enshield +++++++++++++++++++ the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield." this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel

Huzzah! The sun is out, the birds are chirping, the neighbors are arguing, and it's Monday! Great day for a Quiz! 1. Which Dwarf accompanied Bilbo a bit of the way down the tunnel (on Bilbo’s first journey down the tunnel)? Good old Balin, wouldn't let Bilbo go alone--but only as far as he could go and still hear the other Dwarves. 2. What did Bilbo steal from Smaug’s pile of treasure and take back up the tunnel to the Dwarves? A golden cup. 3. What key piece of information did Bilbo discover when Smaug rolled over to show his underbelly? That there was a bare patch in the hollow under Smaug's left forearm--as bare as a snail out of its shell. 4. Fill in the blanks (two words): “ ‘Never laugh at live Dragons, Bilbo you fool!’ he said to himself…” This one was very difficult for me, especially without being able to peek at the book 5. Bilbo returned to the Dwarves after his conversation with Smaug, and they all sat in the little grassy bay discussing, amongst other things, dragon slaying. Bilbo grew uneasy; what did he then urge them to do? Bilbo urged them to go inside the door, and close it.
'"Never laugh at live dragons, Bilbo you fool!" he said to himself, and it became a favourite saying of his later, and passed into a proverb.'

HEY RO! omg... we're already there... in the Mountain! Thank you so much for doing these :D What a BLAST! 1. Which Dwarf accompanied Bilbo a bit of the way down the tunnel (on Bilbo’s first journey down the tunnel)? Balin. He always like Bilbo *bows* 2. What did Bilbo steal from Smaug’s pile of treasure and take back up the tunnel to the Dwarves? A cup. Leave it to a Hobbit to steal something for drinking with ;) 3. What key piece of information did Bilbo discover when Smaug rolled over to show his underbelly? Blankety-blank-blank. Some bling was missing, leaving a hole in his be-jooled armour! 4. Fill in the blanks (two words): “ ‘Never laugh at ____ _____, Bilbo you fool!’ he said to himself…” LIVE DRAGON! D'uh, Bilbo! 5. Bilbo returned to the Dwarves after his conversation with Smaug, and they all sat in the little grassy bay discussing, amongst other things, dragon slaying. Bilbo grew uneasy; what did he then urge them to do? Close the door. They didn't go down there an experience Smaug like Bilbo did. I think that Dragon-speech and Smaug's mojo kinda seeps into someone's mind giving them a better understanding or connection with the Worm... hence Bilbo's ability or impulse to get into a debate and play riddle games with the winged furnace!

1) Mr. Macho Dwarf in his flame proof leather jacket 2) He took Smaug's motorcycle helmet, thereby stranding him. His mom made him promise not to ride without one. 3) Smaug's bad boy biker tattoo: Balrogs may or may not have wings, but dragons have Harleys! 4) Biker Dragons 5) He suggested they take the air out of Smaug's bike tires. Only they were confused and instead disabled his Huffy (cheap American bicycle brand). Spring makes me think of my motorcycling days. Ah the memories!

1. Balin? 2. A well-thumbed copy of Fifty Shades of Gold. (A golden cup.) 3. That Smaug was male. (A naked patch on Smaug's breast where no jewels had stuck.) 4. Live dragons. 5. Get everyone inside the tunnel.

Although my youngest once read a "Dummy's Guide to The Beatles", and pronounced that it was, indeed, written by a dummy. 1. Which Dwarf accompanied Bilbo a bit of the way down the tunnel (on Bilbo’s first journey down the tunnel)? Thorin considered it, but Balin, ever on guard against anything that could harm his leader, dared not risk a dragon singeing the smallest hair of his king-to-be's locks. So it was he who accompanied Bilbo instead. 2. What did Bilbo steal from Smaug’s pile of treasure and take back up the tunnel to the Dwarves? He wanted to bring back Captain Kidd's treasure, a chest of Aztec gold belonging to Cortes, and the Lost Ark, but in the end he had to settle for just a large two-handled golden cup. 3. What key piece of information did Bilbo discover when Smaug rolled over to show his underbelly? Bilbo, being the perfect gentlehobbit that he is, averted his eyes from that area whereby he could ascertain the dragon's gender. (What exhibitionists dragons are!) He did, however, notice a small area in the chest lacking gem-encrustation. 4. Fill in the blanks (two words): “ ‘Never laugh at ____ _____, Bilbo you fool!’ he said to himself…” Never laugh at bad puns. You'll only encourage the dragon further! Don't laugh at live dragons, either. 5. Bilbo returned to the Dwarves after his conversation with Smaug, and they all sat in the little grassy bay discussing, amongst other things, dragon slaying. Bilbo grew uneasy; what did he then urge them to do? Cook up a twelve-course dinner. Nothing calms a hobbit's nerves quite like a good meal! But he recommended they do it after they'd moved everything into the tunnel.

1. Which Dwarf accompanied Bilbo a bit of the way down the tunnel (on Bilbo’s first journey down the tunnel)? The short one. 2. What did Bilbo steal from Smaug’s pile of treasure and take back up the tunnel to the Dwarves? Rosebud. 3. What key piece of information did Bilbo discover when Smaug rolled over to show his underbelly? Smaug's gender. 4. Fill in the blanks (two words): “ ‘Never laugh at ____ _____, Bilbo you fool!’ he said to himself…” "Pants threads". (It only encourages them.) 5. Bilbo returned to the Dwarves after his conversation with Smaug, and they all sat in the little grassy bay discussing, amongst other things, dragon slaying. Bilbo grew uneasy; what did he then urge them to do? Build this:
****************************************** The audacious proposal stirred his heart. And the stirring became a song, and it mingled with the songs of Gil-galad and Celebrian, and with those of Feanor and Fingon. The song-weaving created a larger song, and then another, until suddenly it was as if a long forgotten memory woke and for one breathtaking moment the Music of the Ainur revealed itself in all glory. He opened his lips to sing and share this song. Then he realized that the others would not understand. Not even Mithrandir given his current state of mind. So he smiled and simply said "A diversion.”

1. Well, let me put it this way, I'm quite sure it wasn't Thorin. After all, His Majesticness had to disentangle his hair after all this running around, looking for the door etc. And that took quite a while, so Thorin stayed behind. Fili and Kili did, too, since they had to help their uncle. None of the other Dwarves was really required to stay behind, so any of them could have gone with Bilbo, but - funny thing - they engaged in a spontaneous hair-braiding session, and you cannot simply go to look for dragons with your hair only half braided. Only Balin could not be bothered with the braiding, so it was Balin, who went with Bilbo a little way down the tunnel. 2. Still trying to make nice with Thorin, Bilbo tried to steal the last bottles of the Durin family's secret stash of extra-special hair oil - Thorin had expressed his regrets at not having any of that stuff left to disentangle his hair - but unfortunately Smaug was lying just on top of the last of the bottles. Hence Bilbo had to be content with stealing a cup, a large one, if I remember right, quite possibly gold, I suppose. 3. When Smaug rolled over, Bilbo discovered that there were still three bottles of the extra-special hair oil of Durin's secret stash left. That was very important information for Thorin, who was by now seriously considering to borrow Bofur's hat to hide his bad hair day. Oh, and Bilbo also noticed that there was a spot on Smaugs underside that was not completely covered with gems, thus making him vulnerable. 4. "Never laugh at Thorin's hair! Even if it does look a bit mangy or if he is sporting a rather alarming bed-head." Very sound advice that. Now, Bilbo found that out long ago, so his latest insight might have been more to do with dragons. Was it maybe something like "Never laugh at live Dragons"? 5. Well, fist of all, he told them all to stop messing with their hair, especially Thorin, who was still wondering if Bilbo could possibly manage to get a bottle of that hair oil from Smaug for him. Then he refused to go back and talk to Smaug again. And finally, he urged them to go into the tunnel and close the door because he was worried that the dragon might attack them (plus, it was dark in there, and in the dark, no one could fuss with their braids, as the hair obsession was seriously getting on Bilbo's nerves - there might have been a touch of hair-envy, too, since his hair, neither on his head or on his feet, was quite long enough to braid).

1. Which Dwarf accompanied Bilbo a bit of the way down the tunnel (on Bilbo’s first journey down the tunnel)? Balin, cos Thorin didn't want his hair messed up with nasty cobwebs and dragon goo! 2. What did Bilbo steal from Smaug’s pile of treasure and take back up the tunnel to the Dwarves? The golden cup of Helga Hufflepuff- Smaug had torched Gringotts as well 3. What key piece of information did Bilbo discover when Smaug rolled over to show his underbelly? The "now you see it, now you don't" left nipple of Smaug! and a bare patch on the left side, tattoo'd with a dart board 4. Fill in the blanks (two words): “ ‘Never laugh at ____ _____, Bilbo you fool!’ he said to himself…” Thorins' hair? Fan girls? Sherlock Holmes? Dragons' underbellies? Live dragons!! 5. Bilbo returned to the Dwarves after his conversation with Smaug, and they all sat in the little grassy bay discussing, amongst other things, dragon slaying. Bilbo grew uneasy; what did he then urge them to do? Go home "only you don't have one, do you- ha ha!" Go inside the tunnel and close the door- Bilbo had promised Smaug a game of sardines, but, in fact, Bilbo thought this action would take him to Narnia, which sounded like a better plan at that moment in time!

Five last ones - we're nearly there! I only have to avoid a few more snags, crags, and BBQ-craving drags... 1. Which Dwarf accompanied Bilbo a bit of the way down the tunnel (on Bilbo’s first journey down the tunnel)? Well, this scene always brings to mind Colonel Hathi asking his Dawn_Patrol for volunteers. Tolkien says that Fili and Kili fidgeted uncomfortably. But he didn't mention that Oin had accidentally turned his hearing aid off and Gloin was at that moment exactly looking for his tinderbox. Poor Bifur of course did not understand, so Dori was busy explaining to him that Bilbo was not atually offering them his famous green eggs and ham dish; while Nori thought that with his old brother busy elsewhere, he could tease Ori by stealing his diary and throwing it down to the camp below. Poor Ori, after failing to catch the dodgy one on time, went to the side of the bay and hollered down to Bofur and Bombur to bring it up (which Bombur actually remembered later in this chapter!). That left us with Thorin's two senior kinsmen. But Dwalin pointed out that last time it was his turn, and he got badly singed already (Dwarves don't normally bald, and the famous tattoos actually covered the scars of old burns). Balin was not at all pleased with being the last one left. But after he told the younger Dwarves all about how he found a leader he would follow in Thorin, he was asked to make good his own bragging; so he stammered incoherently that vowing to follow the leader does not mean he should go without him on a suicide mission - a glare from the majestic one silenced him, so off he went. He accompanied Bilbo as far down until they were out of hearing; then he bid the hobbit "good luck", waited for half-an-hour longer, and then started up again. Before long, he heard the panting Bilbo below him, so they came out together, covered with undeserved glory. 2. What did Bilbo steal from Smaug’s pile of treasure and take back up the tunnel to the Dwarves? A sneak-peek at gramma's answers for SAST #15! He also took a double-handed cup as a trophy. 3. What key piece of information did Bilbo discover when Smaug rolled over to show his underbelly? A few strands of dragon's hair, left behind last time it got hungry before the cleaner was finished sweeping the floor. The truth is that Smaug was balding. He had scalped poor Azog a couple of hundred years before (originally, Azog had as fine a mane as Lurtz, with a nicer colour and far less lice), but the wig was by now falling apart, and he was desperately looking for a new one. There was a good side to this bit of news - it meant that Thorin would probably not be immolated - but admittedly, it wasn't much. A bit more encouraging was the extra bit of news, about the small patch of his armour which fell out, leaving a part of his underbelly exposed. (Looking up that old gem might consitute cheating, so I'll post Twit's UUT in a separate post) 4. Fill in the blanks (two words): “ ‘Never laugh at ____ _____, Bilbo you fool!’ he said to himself…” "live dragons" I'm actually not sure about the wisdom of that one. On one hand, laughing at any dragon is not entirely wise, as Turin found when he laughed at the dying Glaurung - and arguably, neither Ted Sandyman nor movie-Pippin and movie-Merry came to a good end after laughing at non-living ones. But on the other hand, dogs seem to get away with it - both Roverandom and Garm did. 5. Bilbo returned to the Dwarves after his conversation with Smaug, and they all sat in the little grassy bay discussing, amongst other things, dragon slaying. Bilbo grew uneasy; what did he then urge them to do? To drat the thrush. But after that - to shut the door of the Mountain. Thank you Ro!

*Ro races in, breathless* What, me late? A quizmistress is never late! A big thanks to all 29 of you who played along last week in Quiz #14! Average score was about a 3.4, so a bit better than mediocre! Question #2 is the one that stumped you the most, but I bet it’s one you’ll remember now: I do hope that line is in the movie! As always, do let me know if you have any comments or questions (complaints, though, and I’ll send you off to the Wet Fish Department). Answers 1. What is in the casket carried by the old man who accompanies Bard and the Elvenking when they go to parley with Thorin? “ ‘What of the Arkenstone of Thrain?’ said he, and at the same moment the old man opened the casket and held aloft the jewel.” 2. Fill in the blanks (three words missing): “ ‘You all seem in league!’ said Thorin dropping Bilbo on top of the wall. ‘Never again will I have dealings with any wizard or his friends. What have you to say, you descendant of rats?’ ” 3. What are Thorin and Company wearing when they burst forth out of the gate of Erebor to join the battle? “Hood and cloak were gone; they were in shining armour, and red light leapt from their eyes.” 4. With whom does Bilbo take his stand during the battle? “He had taken his stand on Ravenhill among the Elves…” 5. What does Bilbo see coming at the end of the chapter, just before he his smote heavily on the head with a stone? “ ‘The Eagles! The Eagles!’ he shouted. ‘The Eagles are coming!’ ” Results 5 Points Angharad73 Aragalen the Green Bellerock Brethil dernwyn Elberbeth Elwen Eowyn of Penns Woods Riven Delve sador 4 Points elaen32 Elessar entmaiden Finding Frodo Maciliel Nira Silverlode The Prancing Pony Ziggy Stardust 3 Points Ataahua Eowyn3 grammaboodawg 2 Points Arandiel 1 Point SirDennisC 0 Points (but they weren’t, of course, trying for points…) batik Darkstone Eruwestial37 Lissuin ryouko Invisible Extra Credit (thanks for the giggles and chortles!) to: Aragalen the Green; Arandiel; Ataahua; batik; Darkstone; dernwyn; elaen32; Elberbeth; Eruwestial37; grammaboodawg; Maciliel; Nira; ryouko; SirDennisC; Ziggy Stardust Double IEC to: Angharad73 (fantastic hair answers, as usual); Brethil for the ME Jeopardy theme (and Thranduil); Eowyn of Penns Woods – our Knitter Extraordinaire!; Lissuin for the Star Trek theme, complete with pictures; Riven Delve – bribery gets you everywhere; sador for tying this quiz to yet another song – well done! 1. Which Dwarf accompanied Bilbo a bit of the way down the tunnel (on Bilbo’s first journey down the tunnel)? Balin, because he had the second-best flame-proof suit. 2. What did Bilbo steal from Smaug’s pile of treasure and take back up the tunnel to the Dwarves? A flame-proof set of armor. That, and a cup. I'm pretty sure it was either the Piston Cup or the Stanley Cup. 3. What key piece of information did Bilbo discover when Smaug rolled over to show his underbelly? Smaug had some protective scales missing from his dragon hide. Should have worn his flame-proof suit. 4. Fill in the blanks (two words): “ ‘Never laugh at ____ _____, Bilbo you fool!’ he said to himself…” It's either "the quizmistress" or "flame-proof suits." Or it could be "live dragons." 5. Bilbo returned to the Dwarves after his conversation with Smaug, and they all sat in the little grassy bay discussing, amongst other things, dragon slaying. Bilbo grew uneasy; what did he then urge them to do? Go inside the secret entrance and shut the door. Flame-proof suits are only 60% effective against a direct dragon blast.

I didn't realized I squeezed in before the deadline last week Yay! (Although had I known I might have taken some time for humor. At least there's plenty of that going round.) 1. Balin, though this may have been less out of a sense of loyalty to Bilbo, and more as a means to get away from Thorin's bragging about the size of his hair's fanclub. 2. A gold cup. Thankfully Smaug does not seem to have known the Gemini or Flagrante curses or this would have been much noiser. 3. That dragons are fond of navel piercings, but not of armor maintenance, judging by the bare patch on the left side of his chest. 4. Overtired kids....oh wait, that was me this morning, sorry: "live dragons." (Though I'd also advise against the former.) 5. Get inside the passage.
Before kids, exercising with LOTR meant listening to the soundtrack while I ran. After kids, exercising with LOTR means having an all out dance party with the little ones to the "Break the Dam Release the River" disco mix form the Lego game.

1. Which Dwarf accompanied Bilbo a bit of the way down the tunnel (on Bilbo’s first journey down the tunnel)? Well. Thorin refused because he might get cobwebs in his hair, so Balin stepped up, knowing that cobwebs wouldn't show up in his. 2. What did Bilbo steal from Smaug’s pile of treasure and take back up the tunnel to the Dwarves? The Holy Grail. But since it wasn't on his list, he substituted a different golden cup. 3. What key piece of information did Bilbo discover when Smaug rolled over to show his underbelly? A bare patch, with an illuminated arrow with the words "reserved for Bard". 4. Fill in the blanks (two words): “ ‘Never laugh at ____ _____, Bilbo you fool!’ he said to himself…” armoured opponents. Or live dragons. 5. Bilbo returned to the Dwarves after his conversation with Smaug, and they all sat in the little grassy bay discussing, amongst other things, dragon slaying. Bilbo grew uneasy; what did he then urge them to do? He wanted them to go into the tunnel and close the door. Thorin took a lot of persuading (see #1)
