It may be a common Scandinavian name. [In reply to] Can't Post

The "Thorin" at our school has the surname "Larson", so I think his is a family name, not a Dwarven one.

haha! Actually the joke is that the reason the gown flaps open in the back is because you are in I-C-U.

Manwe, when asked a simple "Yes" or "No" question, contemplated, and responded "the middle one."

That Robin Ungoliant car- great big black thing. Eight wheels like you said. Terrible driver; looked like she'd taken out a couple of trees earlier....

That's cool! [In reply to] Can't Post

My previous car was white, so he was named "Arod". I did name my Old English Sheepdog "Arwen" but I must admit it backfired. Now she acts like a queen!

So be careful with certain names. (Morgoth, Feanor, Sauron...to name a few).
It is also a bit weird to say "Arwen, SIT DOWN!" Sometimes I feel like Lord Elrond with his Elfling! Or is that Peredhiling??

Eowyn [In reply to] Can't Post

Eowyn is actually quite a popular name. I've heard of several people named that...

I've met an Arwen [In reply to] Can't Post

She's a nurse at our local hospital. When I asked, she said yes, her parents were LotR fans---well before the movies were released.

I also know a little boy named Rohan, but then his family's ancestry is South Asian Indian, where that's not an unusual boy's name.

I've seen Rohan as a surname, and knew a girl in college... [In reply to] Can't Post

whose middle name was Arwen. She was pretty self-conscious about it. I think she felt it was geeky of her parents to have done that to her. I remember wishing my LOTR fan mom had geeked out that way.

Before kids, exercising with LOTR meant listening to the soundtrack while I ran.

After kids, exercising with LOTR means having an all out dance party with the little ones to the "Break the Dam Release the River" disco mix form the Lego game.

LOTR names [In reply to] Can't Post

If I remember I think I heard of a little girl called Galadriel but I am not sure if that's true. Anyway LOTR names are not popular where I live for people are mostly French-speaker and though it would be very easy to find a Sam, it would be difficult to find a Galadriel, Arwen, Eowyn or Legolas here! But they're all beautiful names.

Well... [In reply to] Can't Post

as mentioned 'Sam' is a pretty common name in some places and I've seen someone named 'Beorn', too. And that greatly resembles the Scandinavian name 'Björn' (meaning 'bear' I think, so this was clearly intended by Tolkien), that is a pretty common and normal too. Also I think Eowyn sounds somewhat like Evelynn and is therefore pretty nice, too.

Many Sams, but few Samwises [In reply to] Can't Post

Maybe we should only count a 'Sam' if his full surname is not Samuel. I haven't run across anyone name Samwise, but maybe there has been a plain Sam, by itself.

'Sauron' brought forth the rings at my wedding [In reply to] Can't Post

I've told this one recently:
The best man at my wedding was named Sauron. His parents used a 'creative' spelling, but that's his name.
It was kind of interesting having him in charge of the rings...

do you know why... [In reply to] Can't Post

... his parents named him sauron? did they not know who the character was? why would parents knowingly name a child after an evil oppressor?

(yes, i remember that story, starling... +hilarious+! : ) )

cheers --

aka. fili orc-enshield
+++++++++++++++++++
the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."

this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel

One of the sculptors who has been working on some of Games-Workshop's Hobbit range has the first name of Aragorn, which is pretty suitable. Think he is yet to sculpt himself though. Tongue

I have a family friend [In reply to] Can't Post

whose name is Samwise :) his parents were the hippy LotR fan types from the 70s. I think he just goes by Sam, though, even before the movies.
