** Founders' Day -- What's the most unusual thing you've done today?

Let's face it, apart from the joy shared, educational and entertainment value, and the peerless community TORn can claim over the years, a reason we mark Founders' Day is because it is just a tidge (and then some) unusual to make a not-for-profit website and keep it up and running for over a decade. Now I ask you, what is the most unusual thing you've done today? For instance, our friend QT served an ale to an Uruk; I gave a double b tuba a bath. What say you? (Hey, if you can't in good conscience claim to have done anything unusual today, pick something from the past month.) PS A big thank you to our founders, the staff and everyone else involved in keeping this thing going.

Didn't know they needed baths. As usual, you have educated me, SirDennis! Recently I had the unusual fun of partially excavating a cracked septic pipe. I would like that experience to remain unusual. This is a great community, my sincere thanks to all as well, Founders, staff and members . Long may we post in fellowship!

I learned how to operate one of these. It's new equipment where I work (a sign company), replacing a much smaller and less complex machine. A whole new software system to learn (now where did they hide the tool menu, again?).

with my feather duster, with the dog chasing me, to the strains of 'Enola Gay' by OMD. But that's normal around here on a Saturday. Anyway, it's only lunchtime here, so there is still plenty of time for the unusual...

they just need a bath every so often.... and since it is a new to me tuba, I wanted to get my predecessor's dna out of the thing for the big concert tomorrow. Strangely, if you leave the cleaning too long, a shared brass instrument can resemble a cracked septic pipe... at least from a psychological perspective (ewwww). Dealing with septic systems is unusual in these parts... we just empty our buckets in the streets.

though where do you sit if you want to prank your co-workers? Seriously though, that looks like a fine piece of machinery.

Yep. Hubby always seems to be bathing his euphonium, but I must admit, he does get a lot of spit in it. But then he always leaves a mess of brushes and towels around the tub... I didn't do anything unusual, except open parcels ordered with gift cards and other birthday money...so now I'm listening to a nice Ralph Vaughan Williams CD (also got a Scott Joplin), and earlier was browsing two new additions to my collection, "Ring of Words: Tolkien and the OED" and the Weta Chronicles II. Unusual? No, not at all...but very appropriate that they arrived on Founders' Day!

and best of luck at your concert. (I have seen my niece 'primp' her bassoon, which I thought sat on one's shoulder like an RPG launcher. My niece doesn't let me touch it anymore.)

I miss the place, but I am working to pay for a tuba...! And I am more worried about the kid who plays it taking a shower, though maybe he would do that if I told him he could take the tuba in there with him. Cheers, Sir D and thanks for the fun addition to the day with this post...and you are right, we take for granted that this place is here. To have lasted this long is quite a feat -- and to keep it going is worth the effort! Happy Founders Day to you and here's to a year of good but unusual things for everyone between now and TOrn's 15th Anniversary next April!

When I clicked on it, it originally went to a site for Secret deodorant! When I edited it, I found the word "secret" right after "url". Now that was unusual!

Bathing a tuba is out of the ordinary, what was unusual was getting in the shower with it to rinse it off (You see, I was worried it would fall over if I just stood it up on its own... that's my story anyway. )

And someone else put lots of clips in my hair. I danced the Safety Dance. My History teacher applauded my embrace of the French Revolution... my other teachers contacted the school's psychologist.

.... but perhaps unusual for others... on my way home, walking down wooded streets, as i passed under different species of trees, i reached up to the branches and let the palm of my hand slide against the different textures. slightly spiky, yet soft, for some sort of conifer. smooth but slightly raspy, for some sort of deciduous. small, and feathery, for a twiggy tree in bloom. and, best of the best, and i wait for it each year... there's a line of hunched, flowering cherry trees, close together. around this time, their overflowing, clustered, pink flowers make the branches droop a little, as if they were heavy fruit. i love cupping them in the palm of my hand, so soft, so full... you can feel spring stretching and awakening... cheers -- .
aka. fili orc-enshield +++++++++++++++++++ the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield." this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel

I actually got Microsoft Word to do the formatting I required of it without my screaming, cursing, or threatening to throw the computer through the window. Now THAT's unusual, if hardly up the level of bathing a tuba. Maybe if I dusted the piano?

But they do tend to look like puggles at a younger age. That pup is now almost fully grown - he's my Aunt's dog, Gimli. That's a really nice photo. :)
