Oh boy, one of my favorite chapters! [In reply to] Can't Post

1. On what is the Elvenking sitting, what is he wearing on his head, and what is he holding?

I suppose he was sitting on his throne (not made out of pointy things), but I'm sure he was wearing a crown of Autumn leaves and berries and holding a scepter made of oak. That's a great visual.

2. Who does Bilbo find in an especially deep, dark place in the Elvenking's palace?

Thorin, of course!

3. Why is Bilbo able to steal the keys from the Chief Guard and the Butler?

They were drunk on the Elvenking's wine, oh and Bilbo was invisible at the time, that helped.

4. What did Bilbo do with the keys when he was done with them?

He put them back on the guard's belt so the fellow wouldn't get into trouble. Still, I would have liked to witness the scene when the it was discovered that the prisoners were missing.

5. What gave Bilbo away when he tried to get closer to the fire?

Loud sneezes and wet footy prints. What do you suppose a Hobbit's foot prints looks like anyway? The elves probably didn't know quite what to make of them.

Hail and well-met, O barrel-mistress. [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To

we just might get to watch him doing some of his trademarked Elvenking lolling and sprawling.

Ask and ye shall receive.

1. After the Dwarves are captured, they are taken into the Elvenking’s palace and brought before him. Identify at least one of the three following things (be specific, and include what the things are made of): either what the king is sitting on OR what is on his head OR what he holds in his hand.

In theory, it would be easy to get one out of three correct...
A carved throne; a garland of something to do with the coming of autumn (wild berries?); an oak staff.

Honestly, I'm guessing; they might all be correct - or none of them!

2. Who did Bilbo find imprisoned in a specially deep dark place in the Elvenking’s palace?

Quote

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Some august person, who has promised him one-fourteenth of a certain dragon's fortune.

3. Bilbo is able to steal the keys from the Chief of the Guards and the Elvenking’s butler. Why don’t they notice him?

He was invisible. And quiet as a mouse. And they didn't have any talking purses (unlike trolls, Elves were never good in security systems - just think of Haldir up a tree!).

Personally, I don't remember ever having any Dorwinion wine; but getting drunk enough to be pickpocketed - I tend to suspect the official story is a slander circulated by Gimli, to mitigate his miserable defeat in the Meduseld drinking-game.

4. What does Bilbo do with the keys after he frees all the Dwarves, just before they make their grand escape?

He tried all the motorboats in the river, and was foiled; he tried the cars in the parking lot - but the Chief Guard's official Daimler (these are Tolkien's elves, you know - snobbish Brits who wouldn't drive anything designed by foriegners) was being repaired, having smashed into the Magic Gates after he escorted the last dogcart coming from Dorwinion. The DUI charge was not pressed, once the whole affair of the dwarves' escape was hushed up - but he was demoted to Chief Guard of prison-trees, in which capacity he got drunk again and was decapitated by the orcs rescuing Gollum.

With time running out, and becoming frustrated with the whole affair, Bilbo put the keys back just where he found them (next to the snoring Chief Guard) and scuttled back to the dwarves. On his long, lonely journey down the river, he made up a humane-sounding excuse for this moment of panic.

5. The barrels with the Dwarves run aground in a wide bay shortly after the escape from the Elvenking’s palace. Elves rope the barrels all together and leave them till morning; Bilbo wades ashore. With his ring on he creeps close to the fire, and for a while remains undetected. What eventually gives him away?

He forgot to turn his mobile to silent mode, and while playing Angry Birds he made too much noise.
He tried to cover it up be sneezing loudly, but then had second thoughts and took to his heels.

"Congratulations,' [In reply to] Can't Post

said Dildo somberly. "You've just won the booby prize."

What amazed me, was that I did a search before posting that, and Barca-loungers are still being made!

...especially since the Elven-king in it bears a strange resemblance to Lee Pace...Tongue

He was, regrettably, sitting on his finely carved oakentush while wearing a very dodgy crown of red leaves and berries lovingly knitted for him by his ma...and held a size 50 wooden knitting needle in his hand for use on anyone unwise enough to make fun of it. It was supposed to be a circular scarf.

2. Who did Bilbo find imprisoned in a specially deep dark place in the Elvenking’s palace?
Amigurumi Thorin, Tauriel's swiftly crocheted new Pillow Pet. ;)

3. Bilbo is able to steal the keys from the Chief of the Guards and the Elvenking’s butler. Why don’t they notice him?

Good question. Who needs a mini Cloak of Invisibility when one has the power of the Dorwinion drinking game to rely on?

4. What does Bilbo do with the keys after he frees all the Dwarves, just before they make their grand escape?

He returns the keys...along with a strategically placed small piece of red yarn, to make the guilty partyers wonder just what had happened in the cellars that reeeeally ought to stay in the cellars... ;)

Sneezes and a trail of water due to wearing a historically accurate gansey knitted by a culture-sustaining woman rather than a mystical magical waterproof one ohSOOO tightly knitted by a verbose boor with more bull than skill. [* runs to stand in front of mirror, and turns around three times while chanting the magic word*]

*walks off, whistling*

Here goes... [In reply to] Can't Post

the baldfaced attempt for IEC. I don't have a chance otherwise...

1. After the Dwarves are captured, they are taken into the Elvenking's palace and brought before him. Identify at least one of the three following things (be specific, and include what the things are made of): either what the king is sitting on OR what is on his head OR what he holds in his hand.

Stylist's chair made of antlers, perm-setting curlers, mirror. Seriously, the Thorin's hair-envy is getting outta hand!

2. Who did Bilbo find imprisoned in a specially deep dark place in the Elvenking's palace?

Thorin's hairdresser. She had been tailing the Dwarves right from the beginning of their adventure, sneaking into the camp during Thorin's watches to manage split ends and styling issues.

3. Bilbo is able to steal the keys from the Chief of the Guards and the Elvenking's butler. Why don't they notice him?

They were fighting over whether Thorin's hair was naturally curly or permed. Or Bilbo was invisible.

4. What does Bilbo do with the keys after he frees all the Dwarves, just before they make their grand escape?

He carefully fashions a brush that the newly-released stylist uses to make emergency repairs to Thorin's hair. Or he sneaks them back to the guard. Or I'm remembering a different story and getting hopelessly confused. It's been known to happen.

5. The barrels with the Dwarves run aground in a wide bay shortly after the escape from the Elvenking's palace. Elves rope the barrels all together and leave them till morning; Bilbo wades ashore. With his ring on he creeps close to the fire, and for a while remains undetected. What eventually gives him away?

A strand of Thorin's hair wafts gently and cinematically onto the shoulder of one of the elves. Oh, wrong fantasy epic; my bad! So I'm going to say the groundhog saw his shadow... um, wait, Bilbo saw the groundhog's - no, uh, the groundhog's shadow saw.. wait, Bilbo's groundhog - the elves' shadows had groundhogs... no... oh, fiddlesticks. I'll say Bilbo sneezed.

Well, darn -- I just got here [In reply to] Can't Post

1. The Elvenking has a crown of leaves and berries. For some reason, I think he's sitting on a throne made of antlers, but that seems crazy.
2. Thorin
3. They are drunk on Old Dorwinion wine.
4. He puts the keys back on the guard's belt.
5. Bilbo's sneezing gives him away.
"Thag you very buch."

Where's Frodo?
