question re HOME book covers Can't Post

started acquiring HOME volumes as they were being published, so i have first editions of the books through volume 4, lays of beleriand.

these volumes share a similar jacket design...block of rich color, strong typography, no illustration.

i've been browsing the rest of the series on amazon. some volumes continue this design (lost road and other writings [vol 5], morgoth's ring [vol 10], war of the jewels, part 2 [vol 11], peoples of middle earth [vol 12]).

but some don't seem to follow this design: sauron defeated, treason of isenguard, etc.

question: do the middle volumes (6-9) not come in the color+typographic treatment?

many thanks in advance.

cheers --

.

the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."

this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel

The middle volumes [In reply to] Can't Post

that is, the history of The Lord of the Rings, had a different jacket treatment as published by Houghton Mifflin - possibly because it was felt that these would sell more readily than the rest of The History of Middle-earth, and more distinctive covers (with Alan Lee art) were wanted. HoME as published in hardback by Allen & Unwin/Unwin Hyman/HarperCollins had a consistent, all-typographic design for all volumes.

thanks for confirming. i had thought it might look nice to have all of the set with the same jacket treatment, but that's not in the offering (unless i make the jackets myself...)... however, i do very much like the illustrated covers, and could have gone for that unified treatment. but there is no unified treatment, so it is moot.

thanks again for confirming.
