So Azog did defile Thror...one for the Extended Edition? Can't Post

I've just got the second Chronicles book, which I wholeheartedly recommend. Among the interesting snippets are a section on Thror, which show imagines of a prosthetic head with characters carved into it in Black Speech, apparently spelling 'AZOG'. The text refers to Azog carving his sigil into Thror's head, 'as scripted', and thus earning his name, 'The Defiler'.

Now obviously this isn't clearly shown in the film, but I have noticed that Azog is holding a small knife in his left hand as he holds up Thror's head with his right. This would obviously explain why this is so. It also shows that this idea is prevalant in the finished film, and that it was not rejected at an early stage (usually they say as much in the book; for example, the early idea that we'd see Thrain lose his eye at some point was scrapped).

Now we can probably assume that some kind of graphic detail was removed due to concerns over the age rating, but for home video releases I suspect they could probably get away with a bit more in this regard, and possibly get it included in the EE. It would be a nice nod to the book canon and give proper credence to 'The Defiler' tag.

I really hope (assuming it was filmed, and it's not just a "detail") that it is put in the EE [In reply to] Can't Post

Azanulbizar has suffered immensely in the film (no Balrog mention, no Dain, Azog living etc etc.). Have Azog carve his name into Thror's head would slightly make the changes less frustrating.

Here is a screencap of the said image as well. It was in The Hobbit's Tale.

Thanks [In reply to] Can't Post

I haven't see that before. I should clarify my comments - it's a basic plasticine rendering of Thror's head we see, not something like that. They refer to it in the book but don't show that kind of lifelike rendering.

Defiled Thror's * corpse * -- [In reply to] Can't Post

defiled Thror's corpse. The way you put it made my toes curl (hard to do, even now). Wink

My understanding is that mutilating or otherwise messing around with corpses is SOP for necromancers. The plot thickens.

The hope for a Balrog mention may not be lost [In reply to] Can't Post

Even if it's not in the EE, it may be brought up briefly by Dain as late as film three, even if it's only in the TABA EE.

This has nothing to do with Thror's head in that picture... [In reply to] Can't Post

...which is awesome, btw (love the way his tongue lolls out of his mouth). But I was fixated on the utterly adorable photo in the background of Dean and Aidan as Fili and Kili.

It would be appalling if Durin's Bane, The Balrog, gets no mention in these films so heavily focused on Duirn's [In reply to] Can't Post

line, heir and folk, and which are set to serve as part of a series whole with the next set of films, in which that demon plays a significant role in the opening act.

Balrog reference [In reply to] Can't Post

I wonder if they will find some way to work in a mention of the Balrog. But I think it would more likely be a throwaway mention rather than an actual retelling of what happened. Maybe something like "Smaug is the greatest misfortune our people have suffered since being driven from Moria by Durin's Bane." (I know, that's an awful line. I just made it up on the spot, bear with me. Laugh) Anyway, I don't think they will say more than that about the Balrog since anything further would introduce a plot point that wouldn't get resolved during the course of the Hobbit movies.
