Doesnt PJ have his hands full with TinTin and Lovely bones? I would think he has to get those out of the way before he can direct and work on the Hobbit. New Line probably want to go ahead and get this train rolling and so they will have him produce and find a director that PJ approves of maybe? Come on Sam Raimi!! I want a Bruce Campbell cameo!!

Principal photography is tentatively set for a 2009 start, with the intention of “The Hobbit” release slated for 2010 and its sequel the following year, in 2011. If they can't get a good script together in eighteen months, will they delay filming?

How long did it take for PJ to come up with the script for LOTR? I know there was a re-write in there because he moved from studio to studio..but is there some kind of time we know of on comparing how long it took him to do LOTR compares to the Hobbit?

I don't think there would be such a HUGE scheduling problem ...

... with PJ directing. Sure he's got Lovely Bones to finish ... but I think they've completed (or have nearly completed) principal photography and are well on their way to post-production. Lots of directors shuttle between post-production on one project and pre-production on the next project simultaneously. Especially since Lovely Bones is so much smaller in scale than The Hobbit will surely be. Besides, the mountain of design work needed for locations, characters and costumes for The Hobbit, it should be a while before the director would be needed full time. As for TinTin, I believe the deal PJ has with Speilberg is for each of them to direct one of the films in the trilogy (along with third director to be named later) ... so who's to say PJ won't be directing the third TinTin film after The Hobbit films wrap?

this is so awesome! I'm just happy that at least Peter Jackson is going to be involved, even if he's not the director. Just having his creative input will make a difference in the film. any ideas on who will be playing the role of Bilbo?
Theres some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and its worth fighting for.

I would also not be a bit surprised if PJ's team had already gotten a head start on the script and design work back when they were still friendly with NL in the days before the lawsuit ... back when it seemed their version of a Hobbit movie would be a fait acomplit. I seem to remember hearing that some preliminary Smaug designs had been done back then. You know ... just in case!

you can bet your lembas Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have already been working on it. ;) There's really not going to be any comparison to the timeline for writing a screenplay. The Hobbit is shorter and more of a linear storyline (not several directions at once), unless we follow Gandalf to the White Council meeting he left the Company to attend. THAT WOULD BE SUHWHEET! Construction the bridge between the two stories will be the trick. But I can feel it in my bones that our NZ team has already addressed that and have just been waiting to hit the ground and go with this! This is gonna be great!! :D

I'd rather have a director's full attention on a project of this scope rather than have him working on so many projects at once. Not that I'm saying PJ shouldn't direct, just that I'd like to see his plate cleaned off while he's working on *our* movie

I'm no fan of Jackson's work, but there's no need to jeer at gramma's enthusiasm. Why not, in response to the root thread, explain why you feel this way?
