Excited? Yes, very. [In reply to] Can't Post

Even though there's no new information on the video really, and to be perfectly honest of course they are going to say that Smaug will be amazing. I mean, what else would they say while promoting their work? But I'm pretty sure they've given Smaug a lot of thought and that PJ and the crew really are at least trying their hardest to make Smaug something special and understand that he is the main attraction of these movies. And I've yet to see any signs that he won't be anything short of remarkable.

And if the Riddles scene in AUJ is anything to go by, the confrontation between Bilbo and Smaug will be one of the highlights of the whole trilogy.

EDIT: I hope they are not hypeing him up too much. He'll still be a dragon (though hopefully the most cruesome dragon of them all), and it's not like we haven't seen dragons on film before. Might let some people down: "It's a dragon. I don't get what the fuss was all about..."

Do you think Thorin will speak to the Dragon face to face.? [In reply to] Can't Post

Because i don't think he does in the book, however i can see Smaug antagonising Thorin in the movie, just as Azog did.Wink
Perhaps Thorin goes into Smaugs lair, with Bilbo.Crazy

Thorin/Smaug encounter [In reply to] Can't Post

Smaug might talk to (or hurl abuse at) Thorin whilst attacking the Dwarves on the mountainside.

Laugh But did you notice RA, more or less saying, he'll go face to face with Smaug.

No, he says face to face with Cumberbatch... [In reply to] Can't Post

He says prior to that that he didn't get to meet Cumberbatch during the original shoot, and he's hoping to come face to face with Ben when they go back in May.

Thanks for this tidbit [In reply to] Can't Post

I didn't realize BC was also heading back to New Zealand along with MF. (I'm so excited that they are finally filming season three of Sherlock! It's about time!) So, more Smaug bits to do eh? (rubbing hands) Can't wait for the dragon! I think he's going to be spectacular in all ways! (And I noticed RA is growing the beard back!)

Hamfast, I so love that idea! [In reply to] Can't Post

Smaug really has very little dialog in the book but with a talent like Benedict Cumberbatch to exploit, why not expand his role just as others have been? Perhaps Smaug even recognizes Thorin's scent. (Heck, dogs can do that so the mightiest of dragons aught to be a master, LOL). You gotta admit, dwarves probably are on the fragrant side given their insistence on wearing multiple thick layers regardless of the season. Haven't these guys ever heard of resortwear? (Tries to picture Dwalin in a Hawaiian shirt and XL flip-flops.) Wink

A chameleon dragon [In reply to] Can't Post

Rather partial to that idea, Bomby. Smaug flushes to a ruby red with rage. And then transforms to a beautiful blue when he's just chillin' on his mountain of stolen gold, polishing his smug and wicked dreams. (Wonder if he would have a violet phase ...?)

I just looooove dragons. That is, you know, from a good self-preservation distance away. Smile

So, now we know for sure Smaug will be in TaBA ? [In reply to] Can't Post

If Cumberbatch comes to shoot more footage this summer, since all the extra footage, if I understood correctly since now, are for TaBA, we know Smaug won't die in DoS ? Or am i missing something ?

That is a good point. Do we know for a fact that all filming for DoS has been done, that there are no more pick ups left for that film? If so, then, yes, Smaug in TaBA is pretty much confirmed.

I'm wondering about some kind of Thorin/Smaug encounter too, [In reply to] Can't Post

even if it's only as Smaug flies around the mountainside. Thorin doesn't come across as particularly heroic in this part of the book, although you could say that it's just good common sense that he sends the burglar off down the tunnel to do the job they employed him for. But, perhaps PJ will give him a more heroic gloss.

Look what RA has to say about his method acting here. He begged them to show him a depiction of Smaug, apparently so that he can act in character. Does this mean he will see Smaug again and wants to capture the horror and the fear he felt when the dragon first came so that it will aid his performance? Surely this means that he knows there will be some kind of face to face and he needs an image to help his imagination.

Or, rather than a confrontation, does he want to show an intense fear when he reaches the mountain that the others don't feel because only he knows what they're up against? He says that only Thorin has seen the dragon (Balin? Dwalin?) and so, he needs, as an actor, to see the drawings to help him portray the fear.

Whatever. If they won't even show Ra, they're keeping things very close to their chest.

Some kind of confrontation on the mountainside could be good [In reply to] Can't Post

And maybe even likely, especially if that will be the ending of the Bilbo and the Dwarves storyline in DoS, as I've read some speculate. But I really hope Bilbo goes to meet Smaug alone under the mountain. Not so much because that's how it is in the book, but because the fear and the impact of the dragon will be greater the more vulnerable Bilbo seems.

But we've seen footage of Bilbo running in the pile of gold, and we've not seen anyone else there, so I think it's safe to say he goes there alone. Or at least there's no indication otherwise.

When I read the book, [In reply to] Can't Post

Riddles in the Dark and Bilbo's confrontation with Smaug were the two stand-out chapters of the book, totally memorable. I'm sure the confrontation will be the highlight of the DoS which is why I don't think we will need the destruction of Lake Town until the third film.

Yes [In reply to] Can't Post

Those two chapters are almost like mirrors to eachothers. In both of them Bilbo is confronted by a dangerous enemy in a deep cave and in both of them the confrontation is pretty much won by words, and between the two we can see the growth Bilbo has gone through on the journey. In the riddles he is scared and lost in the dark and not really in control of the situation, and wins the riddles almost by accident or luck. But it helps prepare him for the greater and more cunning adversary that is Smaug. And that time Bilbo wins the battle of the words because of all the troubles he has managed to get through, listing them as titles he has earned : "I am the clue-finder, the web-cutter... I am the friend of bears and the guest of eagles. I am Ringwinner and Luckwearer; and I am Barrel-rider." So the past obstacles have now quite literally made him stronger and are the reason he is able to outsmart a great dragon.

I love how those two scenes play together, and I'm hoping it will be so in the movies as well. They already got the first part right, and I'm feeling quite optimistic that they'll nail the second part also.

I'm not sure he outsmart the dragon, not in the book at least [In reply to] Can't Post

remember how Smaug makes him doubt about his dwarves fellow ? Smaug also guesses one of his riddles, and he nearly grill him to death before he goes.
I think PJ&co will play on this aspect, even more than the book does, because I guess PJ and Phillipa have read the Children of Hrin and know how powerful the silvertongue of the dragons are powerful. It's just my guess though

Yes, I'm not quite sure that he "wins" either. [In reply to] Can't Post

When I read it as a child, I thought he had, but coming back to it in the last couple of years, I see the complications for the upcoming confrontation between men, elves and dwarves that Tolkien is setting up: it is Bilbo's reckless boasting that causes Smaug to lose his temper and sends him off to Lake Town.
