Tolkien Reading Day/Current reading Can't Post

So, if you read something for Tolkien Reading Day on Monday, what did you read?

Or, if you are currently reading some of his works, what are you in the process of reading?

The Hobbit [In reply to] Can't Post

I am slowly rereading "The Hobbit", out of curiosity to see how it strikes me now that I have seen the first part of the movie.

Splendid idea [In reply to] Can't Post

I plan on doing the same, actually. But aside from numerous other books I'm reading, I'm in the middle of Tolkien's: Unfinished Tales, his essay on Fairy Stories, and The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrin. I've started re-reading The Silmarillion, but halted due to the current reading as well as wanting to re-read The Hobbit soon and once I've read through all of these, I'd like to read through the Children of Hurin.

History of Middle Earth Volume 6 [In reply to] Can't Post

And I'm enjoying it immensely. I love to see how LotR grew from a chapter on Bingo the hobbit to the epic tale it is today.

rereading [In reply to] Can't Post

lotr.

i have always loved tolkien's ability to describe landscapes and physical journeys across terrain.

i have spent so much of my life out doors, clambering over rocks, sliding over scree, threading my way between trees in a forest, that his descriptions ring loudly true, and i can see everything he describes so clearly.

i love that about his writing.

thank you, professor.

cheers --

aka. fili orc-enshield
+++++++++++++++++++
the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."

this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel

Currently navigating the history of Galadriel and Teleporno. (What were baby Celeborn's parents thinking when they named that child?? Wink)

Interesting case of unintended results with evolving language changes. Ironic for a linguist, isn't it? (Sort of like the whole Ford Prefect problem...)

CoH is a rough read, just one grief after another. I always find myself wishing that those two simply never found out who they were....Frown
