The trailer for An Unexpected Journey, if you remember, was during "Tolkien Week" last year.

September 19th, just before Bilbo's Birthday .So isn't it likely they'll follow that pattern for The Desolation of Smaug?

Didn't PJ say somewhere that the trailer would come out during the summer?
I'm guessing it'll be in front of the Man of Steel. It's a big warner brothers movie coming out this summer, so it seems like a good and likely place for them to release the trailer.
