 The review copy of Hobbitus Ille by Mark Walker is a beautifully presented hardcover edition with art and interior maps in the style of early English copies and is provided by Harper Collins.
Walker has taken up a very brave challenge in providing us with the first Latin translation of Tolkien's The Hobbit. His intent was to provide as direct a translation of Tolkien's own words as possible and the end result is a complete and unabridged volume where even the poetry is in Latin. This direct translation is not the hallmark of the best translations, nor is it the Classical Latin of Caesar and Cicero.
The vocabulary and grammar bears a far closer resemblance to later and more colloquial forms of Latin. Some scholars will undoubtedly cringe at the compromises of grammar and word choice that have been made in order to create a Latin edition. I'm not particularly fond of the use of "dryads" for elves, among others. However, I think that given his comments on translation in “The Monsters and the Critics”, Tolkien, as both linguist and translator, would be pleased with the opportunity this first edition presents for others to discover Latin and to create their own translations, improving on language and word choice.
This edition is a seminal work and thus a valuable addition to the Tolkien corpus. It will certainly be easier for those more skilled in Latin to read, but there is no reason that it can't be enjoyed by the novice or Tolkien enthusiast by reading in parallel with their own language edition.

Interesting that HarperCollins published this book. They normally go for medium- to best-sellers. This seems the sort of book that a university press would publish.

The only phrase I can recall is "Spectate! Agricolae mortai!" (Look! Dead farmers!) Happy they are doing it though, for those so inclined.

That reminds me of one of the stupidest things I read in my Intro French book. "Paul is watching/looking at the salad." How often do you really need to say that in any language? I'd rather look at dead farmers. Well, not really, but you get my meaning.

That has got to be one of the funniest sentences I have read in a long time...........! Sounds like the Motny Python foray into translation books ("My Hovvvvercraft is fulllll of eeeeels")
"Cherchez!" (French cop pointing) "Agricolae!" (Roman Centurion spots fleeing farmers.)
(This is the sort of post I will remember on line in the market and have to pretend I am looking at a funny text or something as not to appear insane.)

A few years ago i aquired the 'Winnie ille Pu'-translation in a 1961 edition and recently I got an Asterix-book in latin. If i'd had them (and Hobbittus Ille) back then, I might have finished my one year of Latin in scool.

This is a great thread. I took 4 years of Latin in college as I was a history/classics major. That of course was eons ago. Nonetheless I remember some of it (but not a lot).
"Quo usque tandem, abutere, Catalina patienta nostra! Quam diu etiam furor iste tuus nos eludet? Quem ad finem sese effrenata iactabit audacia?" I had to recite that for a play we did as a college senior. Not sure I got it correct. LOL
Rough translation: For how long, Cataline, will you continue to try our patience. And for how much longer will your insanity continue to mock us? And to what end will your unfettered boldness throw itself" ... or something like that.
I think that should have been shouted at Saruman by the Ents in TTT only substituting Saruman's name for Cataline's. LOL. I might have to get the Latin Hobbit.
