They simply put him there at Erebor. How we take him is totally up to the viewer. In the book he was, in my opinion, just as much of a jerk as he was in this film. So no love lost there as far as I'm concerned. And I think we can have one opinion of a character as he is in a movie and another of him as he is in a book, since the two different mediums should be able to stand on their own feet and be seen for themselves and the story they are telling. Even though they may tie together in many respects, they don't have to be mirror images of each other, nor could they be. I don't see this Thranduil thread as trying to justify anything. Just a bit of fun speculation.

We want a dwarves' bathing scene...anywhere, anytime in any of the films!! Heh heh. Maybe they could stick it into the extended edition! And I personally want a lot of screen time given to Thorin washing...whatever he wants to wash. I'm sure his hair would look just as fabulous wet as it does in whatever state it's currently in. Okay. I'm going to go take a cold shower now.

You do me far more honor than I deserve. I'm far, far better at instigating than queening! Besides, it takes a whole heap of dwarf fanciers to come up with all this delightful silliness together -- it's a group effort!
(If Thorin strikes a smouldering Epic Backstory Pose in the woods and no one notices, is he still hot? Just wondering.)

If you read the thread over on Main about the Naughty Dwarf Calendar (!) the things the boys mention about posing in their fat suits etc is slightly off- putting!! On the other hand, a Thorin "wet shirt" moment- (like Colin Firth as Mr Darcy in the BBC Pride & Prejudice).....Mmmmm!!.....

What we know of Thranduil's motives comes from Bilbo's narration. When Thorin yells, "Help us!" it seems to me he's asking for help for his wounded people. After all, he has just found out firsthand that an army isn't much good against a dragon, much less an entrenched one guarding his hoard.
We see Thranduil turn away, but Bilbo's narration puts a little better light on it: "He would not risk the lives of his kin against the wrath of the dragon." No mention of not helping the wounded and destitute...
So I think maybe we should consider another thing: Bilbo chooses to stand with the Elvenking during the Bot5A and seems strangely in awe of him (which I think is odd since he spent all that time helping the dwarves escape him initially). Does that bias his narration?

What would have been the Elvenking's most likely reaction. He could not be sure that the Dwarves were Smaug's main target; he could just as easily be after the Wood-elves' palace. As a lair, the one would probably be just as secure as the other. Rather than rushing an army to the Mountain, Thranduil would more likely just hunker down in Mirkwood and wait to see what the dragon would do. He would not put an army in the field, days away from Mirkwood, if there is a chance that he is leaving his own people vulnerable. Certainly not for the sake of Dwarves.

there are a couple shots of Thorin looking all wet and bedraggled in a barrel. If you haven't seen them, I just want to assure you all that he still looks (wait for it) majestic.

having calmed down, and apparently had a bucket of water thrown on me (cheers Daniel LB - am nice and serene now). No, I will behave myself, I will behave myself..... Actually, this looks like it would be a fun theme park ride- I'm sure there must be one like this in NZ- they seem to have a lot of interesting "experiences" like riding in rubber tyres in underground rivers for miles, jumping off kilometre high bridges (exaggerration) into rivers, so a barrel ride would be fairly tame. What say you Kiwi TORNsibs?

Firstly, this is really bugging me now. Can anyone please explain just why Thranduil conveniently happened to be in the vicinity of Erebor with a massive army just in the aftermath of Smaug's attack? Seriously, did he have impending-dragon-attack-radar and figured he'd get in on the action a bit? Or were they out for joint manoeuvers with the men of Esgaroth? Or just out to see how cool they looked marching in formation? Or did Smaug's attack last so long (or were there so many dwarves in Erebor) that Thranduil was able to marshall his troops and march all the way to Erebor before all the dwarves finished running out of Erebor? Why was he there with his army?
No idea. It seems strange that they were there at all. On the map, it's a long way to Erebor from the Elvenking's Halls. It appeared that Smaug took care of the dwarves in one day, so unless Thranduil's 'army' was just himself and an honor guard on their way for a visit, it seems incongruous.
