You must have bending your palantir in that direction all day just as I have been. Note also, they have NOT yet updated the American weekend profit, so that number may yet increase by a hundred thousand or so. Cool

A bit of strategy? [In reply to] Can't Post

Is it coincidence that WB announced the news of TaBA's move to Dec. just before it hit 1 billion? Then, if fan reaction were bad, it would quickly be overtaken with this good news. Turns out they needn't have worried, as it seems most are happy with the move anyway. Just a guess.

Not to take anything away from the billion (or thousand million)... [In reply to] Can't Post

... but I thought the big deal was beating Harry Potter 1. In a finite series of half-a-dozen, give or take, the last HP beat RotK, and several HPs beat TTT. So it seemed to me a pretty big deal for AUJ to pass HP, as it was essentially a fourth in a series of 6. It seemed likely to both beat HP (other than the last) and notch $1B, but which is more significant depends upon your priorities, I guess.

I wonder if this sucker is going to be able to limp past Phantom Menace.

"horrendous losses" Tongue

I understand how we have a bunch of dudes from Harvard business school who can run a business so that nobody knows what the hell is going on, but how can they find a spokesman to actually say this stuff? I simply would not be able to do it. Or maybe I just don't realize how much the spokespersons make, and they are happy to tell a little fib for a lot of money.

Phantom Menace was released twice, though, before the rerelease that movie was way below 1 billion.

Not even a valid comparison... [In reply to] Can't Post

Phantom Menace grossed $924.3 million worldwide during its initial run in theaters - it only broke the 1 billion mark during it's second release over a decade later when it made $102.7 million. The Hobbit has been out for three months.

Don't forget about inflation and 3D ticket sales.

There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall and the bells in the steeple, too.

The re-release of Phantom Menace was in 3D [In reply to] Can't Post

And well, it's hard to calculate what the Phantom Menace's "foreign" gross was adjusted-for-inflation (I have never seen such a list, probably because it would take ages to calculate so many currencies)

But that was a rerelease [In reply to] Can't Post

Not initial theatrical run. Obviously, that was just in 2D and at a much lower ticket price.

And yeah, I have no idea how to calculate any of that other stuff. The Hobbit has done very well, and I really just don't see the need to compare it (especially without setting specific variables) to a movie that came out 14 years ago and everyone loves to pick apart.

Like it or lump it, (I love it), the film has been successful overall, something which is somewhat surprising given a) The reviews and b) The pretty poor advertising (at least here in the UK, there was almost nothing promoting the film's release a week prior, save the odd TV spot and *very occasional* poster in the window. You literally had to walk into a book shop to find out anything about the movie's existence).Laugh

I saw no advertising in the UK [In reply to] Can't Post

Compared with the LOTR films, there was nothing barring that pretty poor poster of the Dwarves on buses, which only showed up once the film had been released. LOTR was all over the place – in supermarkets, eating places, even the Post Office – and each film even had its colour coding.

I loved AUJ too. Am going to see it again tomorrow, sadly only in ordinary 3D (which I don't like much), rather than my preferred high frame rate version, which I can't see anywhere. Still, beggars can't be choosers – I'll take what I can get.
