Unless Ham Sammy said so in one of her top secret posts [In reply to] Can't Post

a theory to explain Thranduil's presence not mentioned is they followed the dragon there... even more unlikely though still plausible is they lead the dragon there. (Thranduil was all, "release the krac, er, dragon!")

Thanks ... [In reply to] Can't Post

Okay delurking now that my "ahem" mix up with the profile was fixed (Note to Hammy. Do not touch profile button ever again you broke the boards nitwit)..

Back to the thread..

What I had suggested was yes, that perhaps they had heard of or seen the dragon in the general area causing devastation and/or had information from the area around Dale and thereabouts that the dragon was in the area and headed out to check it out. I'm sure that the dragon had been flying in the area and had been causing havoc. It's not unreasonable to assume Thranduil would have heard about it. Also, it's possible that at that point in time Thranduil and the elves were more prominent in the area, having been regularly trading with Dale and had numerous sources of contact in the wider area that would have been providing him with information.

In the film we have to remember that Bilbo is narrating. The tendency is for this to appear to be a one time event, or sudden cataclysmic event (which would make sense from Bilbo's perspective as narrator) when in fact it may have been over a period of days or weeks that the dragon took out his vengeance on the area.

Those are my thoughts anyway.

it might be wise not to include it. Hoards of fangirls fainting in the aisles, multiple case of spontaneous combustion, puddles of drool everywhere...just imagine the safety hazards!

*narrowly avoids spitting coffee on laptop* Dwarf bathing scene?! How did I miss this? It is in the book, but I thought maybe they'd skip it. Silly me...*starts daydreaming* AHEM! Where was I? Oh yes, replying to the original post. Yes...Maybe Thranduil has special Dragon Sensors built into that crown of his. But yes, I'm thinking the little birdies told him and he "happened to be in the neighborhood", but when he saw what a mess it was, he turned his back on the Dwarves.

And Fili and Bilbo staring down a bunny? Must. Have. Screencap. And on a side note, someone needs to make a jersey with "Radagast's Rhogsobel Racing Rabbits" on it. Or at least a T-shirt...

All in the name of science, Ro. And I'm putting a notion to the vote, BTW...so all you dwarf lovers read on! [In reply to] Can't Post

(View 16 wonderful, incidentally, Still missed the bunny stare, distracted. Apparently. Sigh).

HEAR YE! HEAR YE! Anyone entranced and/or bewitched by any or all Dwarves: Acting as pro tempe Knight at Arms, I submit that:

Due to her longstanding, outspoken and unswerving devotion to Dwarf Admiration -

I HEREBY MOVE that as this is one of Ro's threads (so its the right place) that we honor RO with EITHER the Presidency OR Queenship of F.A.B.B.E.D. as in Fans Accidentally Bewitched By Exceptional Dwarves.

President and card carrying Member #1 is a choice, but Queen of FAB(bed) is pretty a darn sweet sounding title to my ear.

SO Can I please get a second OR a mob with pitchforks and torches demanding the formation of a monarchy?

Cinema [In reply to] Can't Post

The cinemas are going to need to take out extra liability insurance. I just know it. I for one know that I will be using a *ahem* sick day both that day and the next. I don't think I will be at work either day....I wonder if I can put in for Long Term leave of absence so I can use the time for more viewings...hmmmm

With that...I must away...I'm leaving for Sacramento and will not be back until Monday evening. 3 hour drive. Yuck.

Cheerio my friendly TORNsibs. If I can post from my temporary quarters I shall do so if not, I shall see you on Monday evening.

good point [In reply to] Can't Post

It's easy to forget that there are actually people here who haven't read the book. So I, myself, will no longer mention a scene that I'm certain won't end up in the movie.

Instead, I'll respond to another point in the post. How did the Wood Elves get there so fast? Well, I think they were already on their way. Thranduil was bringing an army to attack the Dwarves, because he was tired of hearing about Thorin's hair. When he got there, he saw Thorin coming out. To his disgust, even after a dragon attack, Thorin's hair was as Majestic as ever. So he turned and went home in the hopes that Thorin would still be killed by the dragon or, at least, driven away and he'd never have to hear about Thorin's Majestic Hair(tm) again!

Thranduil and Wascally Wabbits [In reply to] Can't Post

When the dwarves are fleeing Erebor you can see Thranduil and his army (or hunting buddies or whatever) just arriving and lining up at the top of the mountain to the right overlooking Erebor. I always thought it looked like an army, not just a hunting party, but if it was an army, then yeah, what the heck was he doing there? And if he hadn't planned on helping them, why show up in the first place - just to thumb his nose at them? ("No help came from the elves that day...or any day since." Pretty much says it all. No wonder Thorin is PO'd!) If he was there because he had heard Smaug was on the move, was he coming to see if Smaug had already taken Erebor? Or was he coming to watch Smaug take Erebor (in which case Thranduil has just been reclassified in my eyes from 'elf slime' to 'elf demon')? Makes more sense actually (as if it needs to make sense at all) that he was there with a hunting party...a very large hunting party. But with a hunting party that large, what were they hunting? Orcs? Ah well, we shall never know. But conjecturing is always so much fun, isn't it?

Oh, regarding the Bunny-Staredown with Bilbo and Fili....why didn't I catch that?! You'd think after 24 viewings that I'd have noticed! sigh. I guess I was just looking around for Thorin at the time. I'll have to watch that once I get the DVD. Should be funny!! Oh, and I too noticed what all the other dwarves were doing in the background when Gandalf and Radagast were having their chat. Yeah, it's fun to see things in the background, especially since the actors in their dwarf-modes are usually doing something. One of the reasons it's so much fun to see so many viewings is to notice things going on in the background.

Fili's shovel: oh, shovels are a necessity on any outdoor expedition I would think. You never know when you're going to have to dig a hole or whack a mole or plant a tree. Heh. (Oh, I can hear it now...are you ready? Not ready enough!...Aragorn: "You have my sword!" Gimli: "And MY axe!" Kili: "And my SHOVEL!!")

On another note: when the dwarves have just exited the troll cave and Gandalf is about to hand Bilbo the sword/knife/letter opener...there is Bifur in the background handing the skull of a goat (it looks like) to Kili...who is looking at it like..."What the...??" LOL!

Unfortunatly it's gone, my precious is gone!, from all cinemas here. sob! So I have to wait the Long Dark until the DVD comes out.Frown

Thranduil's motives [In reply to] Can't Post

I share the sneaking suspicion that if it wasn't to help (not even to evac) than was it to see if there were any pickings? Otherwise hardly makes sense just to leave. Maybe hopes of lots of crisped Dwarves but also a dead dragon............???

I missed the bunny thing again too. It somehow - don't know how - went from 2 shows a day last week to 4 shows this weekend, back to 3 tomorrow thru Tues (so far). DH says its because of my personal ticket budget. I still have a few to go to catch you though.

Finally: Thorin, you majestic dwarf. After this many viewings, you still steal the screen every moment you're on it. Your entrance is the best IFTSMMOP* moment of the movie. Love you. Keep it up.

If Thranduil had arrived sooner... [In reply to] Can't Post

before Smaug got into the Mountain, there would have been a chance of defeating him. In the open one would have more room for maneuvering and archery and/or cavalry could be used. But once he made it into the halls inside the Mountain, any fighting would be at close quarters and pretty much a suicide mission. I assume that Thranduil would have done something if he had arrived in time to battle Smaug outside, if only to make sure there wasn't going to be a dragon living near the borders of his domain. The fact that he did not offer to assist the refugees in any way after the attack seems to me to indicate that he was never coming on the dwarves' behalf, but only on his own, and when he was too late for that he just left. So the Elves showed "friendship" to the Dwarves only while they had money and power and it was to the Elves' advantage. And when it wasn't, they abandoned them. I can see why Thorin is bitter.

About the bunnies... [In reply to] Can't Post

I seem to remember it's the one that is right next to Bilbo when the sled stops that sits up and stares at him. The others were farther away and doing various rabbity things in the background. Since they were still all hitched to the sled, they sort of stayed where they stopped.

ROFL at the latrine story! I bet that went over big! Laugh

Exactly... [In reply to] Can't Post

Why are people spending so much time and energy trying to justify a scriptwriting addition PJ made which doesn't make any logical sense at all...and blaming Thranduil for something Tolkien never said happened? This invention is all because they can't use the Nauglamir stuff from the SIL. Crazy

I hate all the hate Thranduil is getting because of this PJ/Boyens-ism - just like they have dissed Dain with his supposed refusal to come on the Quest...
