Thror's Arkenstone eject button :) Can't Post

Here goes a nonsensical random topic...

The first time I saw it I really expected the Arkenstone to have been more firmly attached to Thror's throne, so when it plopped out just like that I couldn't help but giggle. Also gave me another thought -- maybe Thror loved it so much he had it easily detachable so he could take it to bed every night?

I've wondered that myself... [In reply to] Can't Post

You would think that such an icon would be better secured. Maybe having it easily removed like that was part of the Dragon Sickness, and he couldn't bear to have it out of sight for any length of time.

Ya no way [In reply to] Can't Post

He's not gonna leave that stone in the setting like that regardless of how easily removed it is or someone might take it. I think he did remove it every night and sleep with it!

No, I don't think it was flat. [In reply to] Can't Post

It looked rounded to me. Maybe after they got it out of the mountain they made it faceted as well.

It was kind of flat [In reply to] Can't Post

Not a round globe like I expected either. More like an emerald cut gem, sort of a rectangular octagonal but with rounded edges. Kind of like this (but not quite!):

'"Never laugh at live dragons, Bilbo you fool!" he said to himself, and it became a favourite saying of his later, and passed into a proverb.'

Perhaps [In reply to] Can't Post

…the mechanism securing it could only be opened by Thror's finger?

Thror strikes me as... [In reply to] Can't Post

...someone who might get overly attached to jewellery (Middle Earth seems to be full of them - ahem *my precioussss*). So I think it likely that he took the Arkenstone with him when he wasn't sitting on his throne. Slept with it under his pillow, probably.

Or perhaps he should have had a trap door in that long walkway leading up to his throne. Personally I would have ejected Thranduil at that point, for his irritating little smirk.

BTW I checked in my copy of the Chronicles book, and no mention (or picture) is made of the Arkenstone. I was hoping to find some sketches at least.

Maybe the entire throne is an ejector seat [In reply to] Can't Post

Imagine, upon Smaugs arrival, Thror yells "To the throne!". And off he goes...
